I have a trusty Izusu and Ifor 510 which I happily drive around, however eventually one or both parts of this will need updating and I am just toying with other options. Getting a 3.5 horsebox isnt an option really as I compete and would like to be ablt to take two fatties and kit out and about legally. Have anyone done their LGV or HGV licence recently and if so how much cost wise did it cost you? What could I legally drive horsebox wise with the LGV- I'm guessing this would more than cover my requirements?

...any help gratefully recieved!

My sister took her HGV a couple of years ago as couldn't drive our 7.5T on her car licence as passed her test after 1997. I am able to drive it on my car driving licence. There was really not much difference between the LGV and HGV money wise - approx £1000 basically and quite frankly, you may as well take the HGV as far as I see and then you will not be restricted really as far as horsebox driving is concerned.

You have to have a medical I believe then have some lessons (not as many as when learning to drive a car). My sister did fail the test the 1st time but passed the 2nd time.

Did my HGV in 2008. Same price to do my 7.5t or my HGV so did my HGV. Did 4.5 day course with test on the last afternoon.

I failed mine first time for not getting my speed up enough but passed 2nd time with 2 minors.

Drive like you have corn flakes in the back, not horses!

A 7.5 tonner is a HGV class 4 if you want to refer to the old terminology

HGV class 3 was any rigid with 2 axles

HGV class 2 was any rigid with more than 2 axles

HGV class 1 was artic

The LGV is so much simpler ...
C1 any rigid up to 7.5 tonnes
C any rigid at all including artic unit
CE any rigid including artic unit with a trailer over 750 kgs MAM

That's going to confuse me! Dads a HGV Class1 driver and we always talk about doing the Class 2 when we start looking for a box as we have a few horses that we would like to take out on family rides at some point in the future....but 7.4 tonne wouldn't have enough leaden weight room for us so would then need to do Class one.

Is that still the same? Of that makes sense.

ROG am i right in thinking any driver who passed their test before 1998 is automatically qualified to drive up to 7.5t / C1 class?

Ditto, I use my Dad's terminology too!

That is because the HGV is now the LGV

I think you may be referring to the LGV C1 and the LGV C

HGV is now no more even though many oldies use the terminology

Oh heck, I didn't realise I was an 'oldie'! :(

Why do they have to change terminology, it just confuses!! :D
