Talk to me about rider scarers!

I have a friend who hates these also after a horse once stopped at one and slid his front leg through the rail! Sorry that probably compounds your fear, horse was absolutely fine and freed himself quickly btw.
Haha don't worry, mine also stems from personal experience, had a horse fall after getting tangled in a showjump, both of us were fine but it's put me right off jumps with holes in! At least the showjump fell apart (although not before sending us both to the floor). Logically I know it's rare as rails etc tend to jump quite nicely, but I'm not sure I'll ever be totally relaxed about them.

Love your horse, any idea what the breeding was?

I wish I did - as I’d love another like her one day. She was brought over from Ireland as a just backed 4 year old by the local dealer we got her off, and that’s about all I know. I always assumed some kind of appy/cob - she had the sparse mane and tail of an appy, but would grow a pretty thick feather if left untrimmed.

You don’t see them so much nowadays (at all?) but I used to hate those zig zag fences, where you kind of had to ride at a point. Might not have described that very well 🫣
There's a zig zag on a local XC schooling field . I have NEVER jumped it, its a decent size, (90ish) telegraph poles, and blooming terrifying. I forgot to tell my son this when he borrowed my horse. He doesn't ride often, but is so laid back, he merrily popped over it like it was nothing :o

I still haven't jumped it .

I hate anything too square! Roll tops all the way here, especially with a nice forgiving brush on top!

Hate this jump at Kelsall, I think it looks huge and horrid in every size 🤣

I share your hatred for this jump also! I took my mare to the arena eventing at Kelsall last year and everyone in my class before me fell off at that jump which did not help my mental state about jumping it 🤣 I have often wondered if it's because it's red? Apparently horses do not see the colour red very well and I wonder if they struggle to work it out? It still just feels a very unnecessary jump to me!

Oh god I think I'd have accidentally missed it out if I'd seen that! Skylla was so honest and didn't care at all, trotted through the water and popped it like it was nothing, I still hated it! Though I think I hate square looking jumps as Topaz banked one once and my instructor nearly had heart failure as she wasn't sure how solid the middle was...

Brushes of any sort.

I got dumped in one several times by a pony as a working pupil and came away with nasty scratches all over my body so I absolutely hate them now!

Had an accident where my horse got his foot caught in a gap between two boards and could not free himself. Extraction required several people with tools - do not recommend. Thankfully my horse held it together during the process.

Therefore fences with narrow gaps between rails/boards are a no from me. Big gaps that can't trap feet are acceptable.

Also dislike uprights on XC, I prefer a sloping profile.

I’ve only done a bit of eventing so mine is from my showjumping days which was back when poles were wooden. There were walls gates big solid fillers and the one jump I really didn’t like would be a rustic oxer with a big brush filler in the middle of the fence, so not in the front of it. Absolutely no idea why but it was just a jump I never liked.

I also don’t love wagons, I think they tend to look bigger than they are for some reason! But for me corners and those brush nest things are my real icks. Possibly compounded by the fact we tend to have problems at them because I ride them badly, and they’re the types of fence you can’t get away with that 😅
