I'm about to begin the search for a saddle for my horse - he's approximately 17hh ISH type, but with a typical TB high wither and he is very long in the back. He also has some muscle astrophy just below/ at the wither - so he 'dips away', if that makes sense?

He's liable to fluctuate with his weight during the year - he's a poor doer in the winter but does well off of spring/summer grass and little else at this time of the year - so ideally, I'm thinking that something with the scope to be adjusted fairly easily might be a good idea?

I've a budget of about £500 - but it could be stretched if neccessary, but I certainly can't afford anything as expensive as a WOW or such similiar priced saddles.

I'm not looking at showing or competing seriously (if at all) so I'm more than happy to go with synthetic saddles as well, I've heard intresting reports about the Thorowgood T6 high-wither range anyone have any personal experiences?

Also, anyone able to point me in the direction of a good saddle fitter in the West Sussex/Surrey direction - ideally, with quite a wide range of saddles?

you may be better thinking of 2 saddles, 1 for the skinny times & 1 for the fat times, that way you are not stretching any saddle to it limits?
i love synthetic, always have, even when no one would be seen dead with it,
the synthetic trees even in the budget ranges are far better than traditional but cheap trees in budget-mid range priced 'normal' saddles,
my old mare is 25y she is a french trotter so is very TB like in build, plus she has a longish back which age is dipping, i now use a synthetic western saddle to hack out, the pressure per square inch is quite a lot less with a western & the rider position is semi dressage like so it is good for the old bones (hers & mine), it weighs next to nothing too, i think i paid £50 off ebay, & i can hang a bag with my inhaler, hoof pick & water bottle off the pommel too.
