talking About Old Magazines, Do You Remember Stable Management?

Does anyone remember the old monthly magazine called Stable Management? It was only available by subscription and I remember the address of the office as Tahoma Lodge (silly things us oldies remember!) would be about in the 70 - 80s.

Each month they would do an in depth article with photographs of a well known yard somewhere. It could range from somewhere like Yorkshire Riding Centre to Iris Kellett's yard in Ireland, from Millfields Connemara Stud to Porlock Vale or to an individual like well known dressage or show jumping yards.
Nothing was too trivial for the article, they'd even show you how they hung up their tools, the muck heap, tack and feed rooms, what they fed; literally everything involved in how that yard was run. It was like having a new training manual every month because you learnt such a lot from them.

I wish we had something like that around today, it's sorely needed.
 
Yes I remember it being advertised, but it was before I hada horse so never subscribed, it used to be advertised in Riding I think.
 
just going through e bay to see if there are any of those mags for sale. So far nothing but have come across the 'Look and Learn' mags. Does anyone remember them?
 
What about "Horse Sense" That was also a monthly subscription. My sister collected it, but when I took over the reins (so to speak) and she gave horses up, I inherited them all!! I still have them now, I think I've got over 100 copies. I still like having a look through to see how things have changed, as these were 1980/1990 era!!

Yes I remember it, it was brilliant
 
I remember Stable Management and have a few copies around. I can remember the article about an Arab stud, and there were some lovely horses, very chunky sorts. There were showing yards of all sorts. It featured a long article on the particular yard, and then usually some sort of business advice, and there was a long running series on how to build cross country fences.

A modern day magazine would describe and compare arena surfaces and bedding materials.

The best thing about these magazines is that they were wholly informative and didn't devote pages from how to colour coordinate everything to how to cuddle your horse.

I used to drive my newsagent, Mr Smedley, nuts asking if they were in yet; bless him, he got them especially for me, hadn't even heard of them before I asked. Always great reads but even at eleven, I preferred the 'adult' ones of Light Horse and Riding to Pony as they taught you more and I was like a sponge then! Didn't Light Horse amalgamate with Riding at some stage or something like that?

I used to get Horse Sense!!
 
There was another rather short lived one that was printed on very large format paper. It was in colour in the late 1960's early 1970's and one edition had a picture of a woman I fetched up working for on the cover, spooky.
 
Oops, I have a 1980:eek: copy of Stable Management mag. I'm pretty sure its still tucked inside a photo album from that time too.
Featured Huntersfield Farm over several pages, run by Pauline Voss & Mrs T - Marion Borland BHSI was the chief at the time, backed up by a very young John Dudeney (who had just passed his Intermediate teaching).

Yikes, have really given away my age...... was doing my stage 4 at the time that came out and heading to my Intermediate teaching about a month later :rolleyes:

That mag went out to many BHS yards at the time (many yard owners subscribed to it)

It was, as my hero, Jill, would have said, the height of sophistication, and I think I only got it AFTER I had passed my BHSAI as I previously didn't feel worthy!

Isn't it funny that, as the technology has become available in theory to have shorter runs, and more specialist titles, somehow now everything is about mass market. I bet the circulation of good old Stable Management wouldn't even register on the graph for today's H&H or Your Horse. It really was a professional read. But what's wrong with that.

Who's going to restart it then? Any takers?!
 
Oh I used to get Horse Sense! I even had the Horse Sense binder to keep them all together. When I went to Greece when I was 8 I insisted on packing my own suitcase, all I packed was clean knickers, riding hat and my Horse Sense. :D

Well that's a let down and there's no stigma to admitting your era, I do it all the time! :)

Ooh, I used to work there but it must have been after I was there! It was when Jo Reddington moved down from Berkshire I was there so we had a great time getting it ready for clients; learnt to be dab hand at painting but it was great fun. Can I ask a favour please if you could possibly scan it in for me, would love to see what they did with the place after I left.

It would be great if they (someone please!) could start it again but even better would be for the originals to be either printed again or put online; people could learn such a lot even if a lot of things have moved on, it would be good for them to see the very high standards on those yards back then.

Will go on a hunt for it later tonight :D I left there in Dec 1980 - was the likes of Abdul, Toby, Saffron, Cascade, Cheeky, Lucky, etc there when you were - also in the front boxes - Royal Venture, Erica Jane & herbie? And so many others from that time.........
Mary Carpenter also taught & had been there for years.....Fiona came in when we were very busy.

Di & tessa are 2 of the girls who were there when I was - also Philippa, Gina, Heather

Mind you, we also did painting..... :D
I do remember Puff's 'big' birthday party that we had (anyone not in the loop - do you remember magpie's pony Puff?) he saw out his days at Huntersfield.

I was there much earlier, must have been about 66, right from the first time Jo moved there; some of the ponies didn't come for quite a while as there was so much to do, fencing, ragwort, clear the boxes out etc; think it had been a livery yard before she took over and there was only an outdoor school, nothing else.
Long time ago now but the ones I remember were Sultan who was Nick's pony, Nick would have been about eleven then if not younger. Pedro, little tank with a white face, rode him over Epsom Downs and the little tyke took off with me much to Jo's amusement! Merlin, Erica was Jo's bay mare, a nice grey, Freya was it. A livery was called Hoolahan and Chris Larter had a lovely chestnut. Jo used to do most of the instructing and I took the new and little pupils too. While I was there we taught Harry Secombe as he was on stage in Pickwick Papers I think and had to ride on stage; can still remember his giggling which was fatal, very contagious! I used to have to walk from Carshalton Beeches station to there and each trip took me over an hour due to train times. I bet it's changed a lot now.
 
Blimey - Merlin a small dk bay gelding? (have a photo of him too)
He was very elderly when I was there, he did prob a 30 min lesson or a short hack daily & that was it, prob then about 28+.
Erice Jane was pretty elderly too, I think she was PTS just after I left.

Oh - and I went out with Nick a couple of times! :eek: (he was in his 20's then).

Have only once went back and that was in 1982 - 2 yrs after I left, its prob changed even more now.
I did hear they got grazing out the back behind the barn & outdoor school soon after that last visit I did. The indoor school looked so small on my return, tho from 79/80 it looked huge :D
 
I remember it too! I have a vague feeling that it might have been a 'sister' publication to 'Riding'. I think 'Light Horse' became 'Riding' at some stage too. (But it is all so long ago, that I may very well be mistaken!)
 
That was Merlin, he was a sweetheart. Erica was lovely in her prime too. Did Jo still get her ponies from Derek Ricketts then, he always found good ones for her when I was there.
Was there still another livery yard up the track which used the buildings from the hospital?

I remember Riding magazine was it previously called Light Horse & Pony? Then there was Pony magazine - all black & white in those days!

I think Light Horse did become Riding. it was great/
. Anyone remember the stories by Caroline Akrill? shes called Caroline Burt now and has a hotel in Wales.
 
SM was a brillient magazine - full of really good sensible & useful information. It was a sad day when they stopped publication. May have done better if it had been available in shops.

I still have a copy that contains a BHSAI check list for the exams - I've used it heaps over the years for students I've been training.
