I have my first riding lesson in a long time tomorrow after quitting my riding school but since I've left I developed a few habits, one of which is when i go into canter i start shouting out to myself, 'sit on your arse sit on your arse and leg leg leg and sit on your arse.' So I am fully prepared for lots of funny looks tomorrow :p I also shout all sorts of weird things when im jumping (heaven forbid what will happen when if i ever enter a show!)

Does anyone else talk to themselves when they ride and what do you say?

hi cant say i talk to myself, i do talk to my horses - hacking, jumping and just generally all the while im with them. I still talk to my now deceased horses. I got really upset saturday night thinking about one of my babies who passed away just over 2 years ago. I miss her terribly, but thats another story! sorry

you will have a whale of a time. Enjoy!!

i talk to which ever unfortunate ned is having to put up with me to :p but when i used to have group lessons i use to get told off for talking to my horse or using voice commands because 'it confused the other horses'

Thank you :) i shall :)

I sing to Ronnie quite a lot.. poor sod :p

The other afternoon I was bringing him in and out of nowhere managed to come up with
'little cob, little cob, please walk on quietly, little cob, little cob, I hope you're listening to me!' to the tune of 'go to sleep, go to sleep, go to sleep little baby" :D :D

It tends to work well because it reminds him that he is with me and under my instruction, and not free to join in run along the fence like the beautiful but hooly TB's and drag me down the hill in the process!! :D

Previously, when we would hack I used to often hum or sing quite a lot too. A good one was 'the wheels on the bus', almost in slow motion to keep with the pace of his walk or the pace which i wanted him to go. I found that softer sounds reinforced the calmness that I wanted him to find, rather than upbeat things which would have encouraged 'dragon cob' in snorting around at every leaf out of place! :)

i don't really talk. but i do hum silly tunes haha
i think its a way of relaxing myself, particularly if i'm a little bit stiff.
i've just started learning how to ride again after i stopped when i was a lot younger. i'm sticking with it now
so i think its also a way of me calming my nerves too.

i'm sure the riding school ponies love it though :)

I am often heard saying "oh *******s" when I mess something up! Also regularly followed by a "ffs Emma you can ride better than this"!
I also sing, rather loudly, in the school when Dixie and I are in good moods and its going well! Despite my encouragement, Dixie is yet to join in with the harmonies :)

I talk to Ebony when we are out on a hack :o Frequently heard to say 'yes its a manhole cover and no its not going to eat you' 'watch that bit of paint there it might be hiding a croc' 'right come on then time to go through the jaws of death' (railings with a gap in the middle) and various other things. The girls I ride with think its hilarious and have me along for the comedy value :p :D

Ebony is a Sec D x TB so it depends on which head she on whether we have a nice sensible hack or not. Sensible head v OMG I'm going to die head makes things interesting :D

If I mess up I generally shout at myself using my last name, normally along the lines of 'come on crudge what the hell are you doing come on, right lets go!' I must look crackers :p

I also talk as if I am the horse sometimes, especially at work :/ the customers must think im out of my mind :p

I have had many embarrassing moments out hacking..involving people walking round the corner to find me singing incredibly out of tune and usually incredibly loud!

I also usually say a lot of things along the line of 'No Comet, the cone is not going to eat chu, but oooooooh, its so scary, look at it, all orange and reflective' Usually in a very strange voice!

I have always found that Yellow Submarine has a good walk rhythm, though I must sound bonkers singing that as we hack down the road!

Doing XC, I sometimes find it helps my riding to talk myself and horsie through what we're doing.....like 'slow down, trot, pick up right canter, now we're turning right, steady...' and of course counting the canter strides into the fence out loud to help keep the rhythm...'one, two three four...........good girl.....'

I remember decades ago being asked to sing nursery rhymes whilst in group lessons at a riding school, the theory being that if you are singing then your mind is elsewhere, your abdomen relaxes and rider tension is reduced.
