looking for some help, cannot decide whether to go hunting for a new pair of long boots for competitions, or go down the short boot and gaiters route again due to having small feet 3.5 and wide 14.5" calves.

I currently have a pair of long boots that I wear for everday, that I could clean up and keep for best and have new everyday boots, but am really undecided.

Help appreciated :)

low level stuff, will be doing a bit of everything, dressage, jumping and hopefully xc, budget around £200

If you are staying low level the a nice pair of short boots and nice matching gaiters would be fine. In showing there are particular views about short boots etc - but not for what you are planning to do.

it's personal preference then. I hate short boots and like the stability offered by long boots, but I guess it will depend if you can find some that fit perfectly :)

I started wearing long boots for the stability, but wasn't sure if I would get stability with a decent fitting short boot and close fitting gaiter.

Watching with interest as my foot/leg measurements are the same as yours and I too find it difficult to find long boots to fit. I think Ariat Bromonts are probably our best bet due to the huge range of sizes.

I have always gone for short boots and gaiters (Ariats, look fairly smart) but now I am competing more I would like to try some long boots.

Im the same as you, although size 4 foot and still really struggle! I don't think ive ever had a pair of tall boots that fit comfortably. I currently ride in Ariat Bromont paddock boots and their classic chaps, but I find the chaps too bulky and don't have a lot of 'feel' when riding so looking to swap to their close contact chaps.

Yes, if you can polish your current tall boots and keep them for competitions, I would go for that.
Do you reckon you could get them to look shiny? That's the advantage I find in tall boots: no matter how old they are, they are much easier to get to look nice for a competition (with enough elbow grease and Kiwi cream) than gaiters which have been used for a while.
