It appears Tally Ho Stables, who are one of the very few places to offer hacking into Windsor Great Park, have been given notice by their landlords as they want to sell.

They’re based on the edge of the park in Englefield Green - prime land for residential development I’d imagine…

Such a shame :(

It's proving far too easy to get planning for houses on Equestrian properties - very sad.

It’s very sad but is it too easy, we need to build homes full stop .
It was very sad when they built homes over the allotments in the village I grew up in people loved them .
We have to build over land to produce homes it’s a myth that brown field will produce enough masses of land will turn housing .

In the south east it would be better to put the empty investment properties to work before we destroy more land.

Do we need more homes or just less people? Or people in different places? There's some nice houses around here that aren't silly prices and have been for sale for ages
Theres too many empty houses in our village and round about and lots of holiday lets and second homes. Much less of these would help the housing crisis

The town I live in has quadrupled in size in the past 30 years. That might not sound too bad but prior to the late 60s it was a small village, surrounded by tiny hamlets. Since the 80s the village has grown so large it had absorbed a few of the hamlets and was now most definitely a town. In the 2000s alone the town has more than doubled in size and not one of the hamlets is not absorbed. Yet more houses are due to be built soon, despite the fact you cannot get to see a doctor, and there are no dentists with spaces (private or NHS) within the catchment area.
My house used to be suburban, now it's nowhere near the edge of the town, and that's happened in less than 10 years.

Oh no! I wanted to book a ride in Great Park from there. I suspect that in view of the new planning regime that they won't be the only onesd

Bit of government joined up thinking required here.

Starmer is bringing in new labour laws making WFH/flexible working availability madatory.

At the same time we need new homes. With WFH meaning less need for office blocks surely they should be deemed brownfield and mandatory conversion into housing.

I challenge this every time I see it and so far nobody has been able to give me any verified numbers on properties bought as investments that are just sat empty. I now believe it's largely an urban myth and that though there are likely to be some, the number will not go anywhere near providing the amount of housing needed.

Please anyone who wants to respond to this don't give me all over again the pointers to properties bought or for sale as investments. For that to be affecting availability of homes they have to be both bought as investments and empty and the statistics on properties where rates are not being paid doesn't support the assertions being made.

All of the once green belt round here has been being built on at a great rate for the past 10+ years. All my stabling and riding places are built on and there's no sign of it slowing down. I now keep pony 13 miles from home 😢

Same in Hertfordshire/Essex, so many yards and venues are gone, of the ones still there sone are owned by developers playing a waiting game. Lots have planning applications put forward periodically and they'll keep doing it until they get a yes.

It's all luxury million pound plus houses.

I've been trying to contact Tally Ho to arrange a hack in Winsor Park but there is always no answer. Does anyone know if they are still open?

Cannot they turn the empty shops in town centres into residential first. They all seem to have flats above but the commercial units below are empty - surely these units should be residential and all the closed pubs.

Some could but a lot of the big commercial units they struggle to let suffer with lack of windows which are needed by regulations so not easy to adapt.

Anyway it comes down to profit and big expensive luxury houses are developers want to build. There's one going up on a field on the way to the yard in greenbelt land No price on it yet.

That’s what I was thinking, so many shops have closed because the business rates are so high . We need one and two bed homes for people to get on the property ladder not million pound luxury homes . In my village the only homes that have been built over the last 4 years have been priced at over £600,000, there is no chance that any of the locals can afford to buy .

Around us the council are selling their farms. They have many. Lots of these are livery yards, but the tenants cannot afford to buy them. The livery situation near us is pretty bad at the moment as places are being snapped up.

We will end up like Hong Kong there willbe no green spces in the uk soon. Yet around me there are loads of buildings sat rotting for years, it really shouldn't be allowed.

Having lived in Hong Kong I can assure there are many beautiful green spaces - national parks all over the island and New Territories. Housing is built vertically to maximise the space where they can build (and terrain plays a part).

However, when I lived in HK there was an issue with empty housing there too as mainland Chinese would buy up apartments as a safe way to get their money out of China. That might have changed with the increased influence of Beijing in HK, I doubt it’s such a safe investment now.

Yes, back from my hack on Sunday, sadly they are closing in October :( Such a shame such a brilliant place to go for a lovely hack without all the road work. Our guide said the place has been brought by an American lady who apparently wants it to do her own equestrian venture, so no idea what that will be.

If anyone had their eye on any of the horses the guide said they are open to offers.

OH no. I wonder if I can get in a ride before they close!

I have heard of another place locally where someone operating a business with 16 horses has been notice to leave.

I went for a hack with them last week. It was great. As you say very little road work to get into the park. I couldn't believe how quiet the park is. Such a shame they have been given notice. Our guide said the American lady that is buying it is going to knock it all down and rebuild. She knows lots of very rich people and said she wants a different type of cliental than there is now. That rules me out!
