I've been living in the South Island for about 18 months now, but haven't managed to take Tally, my nearly 21 year old pony-type, out to any as I evented my young horse last winter. However, this changed as baby horse had been acting like an idiot (more on this later!) so Tally got promoted to #1 horse and tackled Rangiora ODE over Queen's Birthday weekend. We had been competing at Training (95cm) but went down to 80cm as he hadn't been out eventing in so long.

Dressage was a bit of an embarrassing disaster. Tally took great offence at doing dressage on frozen ground when the temperature hovered at about -3, in full view of the cross country course. Remarkably, we were not last after the dressage, but we did receive a 2 and "serious resistance" for Tally's slip-rodeo buck-giraffe change of rein in trot. I then walked the cross country. The water jump looked like this:

It was still frozen. Questioning my sanity (and whether Tally would continue his gentlemanly ways or simply buck me off into the water), I headed to the show jumping where Tally took control and skipped around for a hilariously enthusiastic clear round. I'm fairly certain he'd learnt the course as I don't think I was steering. There wasn't much on the XC that worried me as it was a nice bold gallopy course. The two things I was a bit iffy on were the trakhener as a) Fready had quite literally climbed it the year before, and b) Tally had dumped me in one up north, and the bounce, as Tally had dumped me in one XC schooling the week before. However, there was an option at the bounce (a corner), and, as I found out later, an option for the trakhener.

Tally was bouncing like a pogo stick warming up for XC and shot out of the start box like he was fired from a cannon. He zoomed over everything, including taking a stride out and jumping the entire (a good 1.10m) height of the hedge. We jumped the corner instead of the bounce, shot straight into the water with great enthusiasm, and to my great surprise, straight over the trakehener without even looking at the ditch. He was home clear and full of running. My favourite part of the whole round was his little fluffy ears that did not move from their locked on position. He was absolutely delighted with his day out and....

Unfortunately, no photos of him actually going, so you'll have to make do with Tally XC schooling the other weekend.

Fready has regained his sanity after deciding that other horses are terrifying and he was going to lose the plot if ridden in the vicinity of them. We had a very tricky dressage warm-up at the last dressage competition I took him to so I scratched the second test and came home. However, I had his back done, and gave him a couple of weeks off. He is better but still seems to think that horses around him are really quite scary.

I took him out to McLeans Island at the weekend for a bit of schooling:

He is jumping well, however, and is slowly getting over his issues with ditches. I've taken to jumping him with spurs on and he's a lot better as I can combat his leftward drift while a whip makes him back off.

And we're hacking out again

Plans for the next couple of weeks include hunting and eventing (Tally) and dressage and more XC/SJ schooling (Fready) and sitting in a paddock getting fatter (Missy).

Lovely photos and report. Especially like the last photo of the grey , can his ears be any more pricked !
I remember walking frozen xc courses when I was in NZ a few years ago, very interesting !

Its cray - in the North Island we are eventing on hard sunbaked ground and in the South they wait to the winter months and jump on frozen ground.

clairbearNZ - is the Rangiora event still held near the town or out of the area. They used to have an awesome course, built for Springston Trophy, maybe 25 years or so ago, had some wicked jumps in it. The train tracks run along the side of the Pony Club grounds.

They're all mad down here! I think, by eventing in the winter, they're hoping to avoid the hard ground, but instead we all freeze to death.

Rangiora ODE is at the pony clubs grounds just out of Rangiora by the train tracks. It's a really nice course, big and bold!

Unfortunately, Tally has now gone lame so he gets some time off and Fready gets promoted to #1 riding horse.

Great photos, the grey horse looks brill for his age. I suppose a frozen water jump is a good incentive not to fall off into it!

If I had known you were there I would have waved as you went passed! Spent the lovely sunny afternoon of both Sunday and Monday spectating.

We were at the grounds with the riding club yesterday. There was still water in the water jump so it was well used.

I was on the small grey horse in purple going at high speed late on Sunday. Very embarrassed by my lack of brakes! It was gorgeous weather though. I'm taking Fready (Black Canary) to the North Loburn dressage at Rangiora on Sunday. Now that Tally is lame, Fready may be going to Eyreton ODE on July 5th.

Tally is always happy to be out and about. He's very mournful sitting in his paddock, but is sound on a straight line and to the right but 2/5 lame to the left (head nodding). Hopefully he'll be back to zooming around like a maniac soon.

I'm sure we will catch up sooner or later! Am currently doodling around on my three year old - she will go to the NEG dressage day next weekend just for an outing, not competing.

I've done the NLEC days - they are awesome, but just a bit busy for Maggie at the moment. Eyreton has a great course as well (says she who doesn't jump), we have the grounds booked later in the month for the riding club, so another day out for the baby horse.

Poor Tally, fingers crossed he will be good soon.

Fready was absolutely fantastic at the first NLEC day then lost his mind entirely at the second so I scratched from the second test. His test was actually okay but we spent half an hour before that exploding in circles because there were other horses moving near him - his one big 'thing'. Take him out somewhere all on his lonesome, and he's happy as a clam!

I went around the Eyreton course last year on Fready - his first 80. However, I just found out they've already closed the entries so perhaps he won't be going this year! We might aim for Springston ODE although I fell off there last year.

Tally is already bored and destructive. I brought him in for the farrier today and he jogged the whole way in, threatening to buck. He's nearly 21 and has had less than a week off.

The baby horse out show jump schooling at the weekend. I need to fight my urge to chase him into jumps as it doesn't feel like we have enough impulsion. He's Mr Minimum Effort about pretty much everything, including jumping!
