I've just wormed my two (on Friday) with Equvalan Duo and this morning when I poo picked I've noticed half of the droppings looser than normal with a few tapeworm in each pile. As its only half the droppings I'm assuming its only one of my horses that is passing them.
I regularly worm count which comes back zero or low and I poo pick daily but I haven't wormed since the Autumn with a combination wormer.
Should I be worried that I have seen evidence of tapeworms or pleased the wormer has done its job and just reworm again in a couple of months?

A Worm count will never show up any tapeworm as they reproduce by segmentation that contain eggs.

As you have wormed with a wormer that treats for tapeworm what you are seeing is the dead ones. For up to 72 hours your horses may pass worms of all types that have been killed by the wormer.

I always fossick through the dung after worming for at least a couple of days as it gives me a good idea what my horse is carrying.

Tapeworm have become a bigger problem since the advent of Ivomec and others in that family as the tapeworm are not killed by this chemical - Ivomec acts by interupting the nerve signals but doesn't have this effect on tapeworms hence the reason for worming at least once a year with Praziquontal.

Thanks - I've always thought I was doing something right as never seen any worms in poo following worming before and therefore never bothered getting a blood done for checking for tape's. Bloody things. So I shouldn't worry too much then?!

No expert at all but I had the same experience I always change wormers etc then used double strongid p(which I had never used before) and was quite shocked at the amount of tape worm. I poo pick religiously too. So it was interesting! Yuk. Horrid things but I suppose at least you know its worked. Am sure that must feel good to get rid.
