posted in Veterinary but not many replies. I dosed in Nov for tapepworm then 8 week later routinely then 8 week later Panacur Guard to get the encysted reds. Do I really need to worm again for tapes ? We are not in an acidic area.

Some people only worm for tapeworm once a year, but most do it twice, Spring and Autumn. If in doubt, ask your SQP or vet.

I wouldn't personally, We worm once a year for tape worm. But worm count 2-3 times a year for encysted red worm.

Worm counting is the way forward - cheaper and you dont have to put chemicals into your horse unnecessarily.

Long term this method will reduce the likelihood of resistant worms.

Look at Westgate labs website - cant recommend worm counting enough.

Where does worm counts for encysted red worm?

Westgate dont - and I dont know of anywhere that does as encysted are not mature, so they dont lay eggs to be in the dung (sorry, I do stand to be corrected tho)

OP: Tape & Encysted Redworm will not show up in any wormcounting

Regardles of the type of soil you are on, Tapeworm has a 6 monthly life cycle so ideally should be treated for every 6 months regardless. As for the Acidic soil this is when Tapeworm can occur more often and vets that Blood test for Tapeworm in these areas sometimes have to recomend Tapeworm treatment every 4-5 months.
Worm counts are the way forward - but it is important to remember that they CANNOT detect the inhibited encysted redworm that occur over the winter months and Tapeworm detection is only 100% accurate through an Elisa blood test via your vet.
Worm counts will help to stop the resistance biuld up against all known chemicals wormers and is better for your horse in the long run.
