Well, I decided to take my own advice (don't always :-)) and had the pony stallion bloodtested for Tapeworm. Results came back on Wednesday and I am sure glad I did. He's loaded with them but at least it was not our grazing that was the source as its ancient pasture, used by sheep for a couple of hundred years, re-sown for horses about 4 years ago, poo-picked evry day since then when in use -- often rested -- and only 3 different equines on it in all that time.

So it was EquiMax for him on Wednesday evening (he was luckily very easy to dose (we haven't done this with him before) and it doesn't seem to have affected him in any way, which is a relief. The vet says he will need re-testing in May and we only need to worry if his score is still high then, but in the meantime I will be e-mailing the stud we got him from to suggest that a few tapeworn tests might be in order there too.

Tapeworms can come in on hay and hayledge

REALLY? I had no idea! Doesn't the process of drying/ wilting & bagging kill them off?

Local vet also told us that the midges can carry tapeworm too and said we should does for them every three months. We still have midges here in Norfolk and its flipping November. Poor horses are being eaten to death.
