Tarantulas I’m my stable!

I mean absolute monsters! Lots of them.
I knew they were there. They have been around for a while noticeably, I can guarantee if I rug my horse there will be a big spider to flick off first, every time!
I’ve just taken all my rugs out of the stable. They haven’t been there for any length of time. I only keep what I’m using out so there’s a fly rug or two, a LW (admittedly not used for a few weeks) and a cooler. Absolutely crawling.
On the plus side I’m now even less worried by spiders than before as I don’t have time to panic I see them that often 😂
Why are they all congregating in one stable? The ones either side get the odd regular looking spider as all stables would but mine is really ridiculous!
 
I threw a stable rug over a mare once and she started quivering, almost looked as if she was about to colic. Took the rug off and a massive spider was running over her back. I shudder thinking about it now.
 
I live in a very old cottage. We're plagued by those spindly ones! I go round the house with my hand held mini Dyson sucking loads up every day......there's always 2-3 of the b*****s in the shower room in the mornings. But don't think I could cope with the big black hairy ones. BLEUGH!!

We have the same! Barn conversion on a farm (I blame this!)
I was moaning to my mum only yesterday about never ending cobwebs.
 
we have pet spiders in the house, the deal is if the eat the fly's and moths they can stay...................if they don't then they are out!

in the winter it is quite fun watching the spider wars on the ceiling.......................
 
I thought there was a thick hairy one in the spare room, called OH as he catches them and puts them out. It turned out to be grasshopper, hopped in through the open window. Not so easy to catch.
 
I have never seen so many, and so big, as when we had a bit of a clear-out on our yard a couple of months back. I am seriously phobic, a few scattered and ran really fast in all direction and I screamed so loud it made my baby cry. Felt so guilty! Also don't want him to grow up scared of them, I really need to man up. I've had so many horrible experiences with them though - in my hair, on my bath towel, in my bed. And now they are lurking in their droves in every corner of my stable, the tack room etc. I haven't ridden since Sunday, about to go and ride now and I bet some have set up camp on/under my saddle. Eeeeeeek.

Also had a wasp in my car (whilst driving) and an earwig IN MY BRA on tuesday, I'm so done with creepy crawlies! :eek::eek::eek:
 
Why are people so scared of spiders? Its bizarre how its such a common fear when its something so small and harmless (I am also scared of spiders) oddly I think I would be happy enough with an actual tarantula, they are more like hamsters
 
This thread is making me twitchy!!! I f---ing detest the bloody things.

And Peter - people are afraid of them because of their 'alienness', it's natural to be afraid of things that seem odd. There was a study done on it ages ago, I might try and find it. Quite a lot of us also 'inherit' the phobia so it's learned by seeing parents/relatives be scared when you're younger. The memory that set off my spider phobia when I was about five was my mother shrieking at a shadow on the wall that turned out to be a very large spider, what actually unsettled me was seeing her scared.

And just to upset the other arachnophobes even more....if you had 10,000 spiders in a room you would actually end up with, eventually, one, enormously fat spider :D They eat their husbands too after having eggs fertilised in the autumn....!
 
A friend and I were discussing why spiders are so scary the other day... I have a theory that it is down to how they move as it is akin to any cartoon 'baddy' creeping step by step, on tip toes, lifting knees high with every step - really hard to describe what I mean even when I have just done it around the room to try and help myself decribe it!!.
 
I love spiders. :) When I worked at an agric. college I used to go over to babysit the tarantulas (cute and furry to stroke) on my knee while the animal care arachnaphobes cleaned their little homes.

What's not to like about something that eats horrible flies/midgies?

i think it is due to them being one of the first things you see when you start crawling about as a baby, coming straight at you ahhhhhhhhhhhh

What a good idea!!!....the reason I hate them is because they look the same back and front and I don't know which way they're going to run. Did you know that in Dorset they have jumping spiders?...wonder if they're in Somerset?:eek:
 
I personally do not have a problem with spiders, I grew up with my mum saying "If we have spiders it means we don't have mice!"

I know which I'd prefer:oops:

I need to go and have a lie down. I’m terrified of anything with eight legs and more than one pair of eyes. I seriously have a complete meltdown if I so much as see a picture of a spider, my fear is that bad.
We have massive ones here too that jump called Huntsman. I nearly go into cardiac arrest every summer when they appear.

Oh my god, my brother does this! It's mental torture I tell you!!! :p
he'll look seriously just over my shoulder and when I ask him what on earth he's staring at, he'll reply 'oh, nothing; just the spider about to land in your hair.' :rolleyes::eek:
 
I'm really sympathetic towards phobics, I understand it's an irrational fear, but that it feels terrible.

I've always been the spider/wasp/bug catcher in work, and in relationships. With my ex though, I used to grab the offending spider in my closed hand (to evict it) but then couldn't open a door or window one handed. And the ex would run screaming round the house shouting rude things and refusing to come to open the window/door. Impasse. :D

My 8 legged friends and I are much happier now, without all that screaming (current bloke is a bit less dramatic, and doesn't mind them).
 
Just the other day I thought about Red's spider thread. Are yours as big as hers? You are very brave, I must admit!!! I am a total whimp, when it comes to spiders!!! :D
 
I am not worried by any UK spider of any size, or tarantulas etc. If you are not frightened of something, there's no bravery required.

I'd not be so keen to get up close and personal with a venomous foreign spider though. ;)
 
I salute you Shilasdair! I really do wish I didn’t have this fear. I can cope with rats, mice, snakes and cockroaches, no problem. But spiders, even if daddy long legs freaks me out no end. I get worse the older I get to be honest.
My very understanding neighbours now know the minute they hear my high pitched screams to send their brave men folk to my place to assist with the swift removal of said arachnids.
 
When living on my own, I had a kind neighbour that removed said huge hairy spider out of bath and do the dastardly deed! When I found the third spider in the bath I was convinced I had a plague! That is until I saw him put it in his pocket. I saw him off at the door and saw him put the spider gently on the ground. It must have been the same spider that kept coming back!!...Gusbear..I can hold mice and have had snakes around my neck and I've even cuddled a lion cub! It doesn't make any sense other than the 'which is front and which is back' problem!
