If you are going to ride down a road that people in cars drive on and they slow down for you try thanking them!
Now, normally I would let it slide-the bit about the thanks...but the fact that you were riding a fat coloured cob wearing a fly rug and using a headcollar and lead rein as a bridle, while dragging behind you another fat cob AND using your mobile and hatless is in my opinion unforgivable.
Only for the fact that I too am a horse rider and was aware that people might be hacking today saved you from death and me from having my car cut from the back end of your horse.
Next time love you may not be so fortunate and it could well be your last hack.

If she was leading and on her mobile, I think it would've been nigh on impossible for her to thank anybody!

Did you not stop and share your thoughts, or is it a busy road?
 
She could have at least acknowledged! LOL
I know she couldn't thank me...thats kind of the point no hands free, no proper bridle, she was totally oblivious to everything apart from her phone call!
I am hoping that she reads this and realises that today was a lucky day and next time might not be!
 
I have taken to shouting 'thank you' in a pointed tone through my open window to riders who ignore me as I drive slowly and carefully past them.
I'm not sure I've had any effect though!
 
Non-thinking riders, we all have the responsibility whilst riding on the roads to be very aware of other road users. and to wear protection and hi viz, both rider and horse, I was out on a pony the other day all protection on both of us and using my eyes, ears,arm signals and I have to say all drivers were great from small cars who slowed right down to the big dumper trucks who went slow behind us till we managed to get into safe area to let them pass. Riding as the Tardebigge rider did is asking for trouble, hope they do recognise themselfs and start to take better care of themselfs and the defenceless horses in their care.
 
I would never ride on the road without a hat, I learned that it is too dangerous after my pony decided she was going to take on a HGV lorry. I also do my best to move out of the way for cars and lorries. I also wouldn't talk on my phone whilst riding as I am far too scared of breaking or dropping my phone more than anything! Thanking all vehicles is a must! I always, without fail, will thank someone if they have taken the time to slow down and give me a nice wide berth while passing.

I believe that is respect other road users they will respect you!

I hope she reads this and bucks her ideas up in the future!!
 
There used to be 2 funny ladies who lived in a village where I kept my horses. They were slightly older ladies who used to ride along side by side very slowly with reins slack as a yak having full on conversations totally oblivious to what was going on around them. I won't name them but lets just call them L&M and if my friends & I caught ourselves yapping too much, plodding along or with reins too loose we would say " oh we are having a L&M moment".

However these 2 were members of Horsewatch and at the end of their regular meetings they would always stress that riders must be polite to other road users. They actually demonstrated how we should say thank you & how we should wave. Their thank you was VERY slow and drawn out, stressing the fact that it's 2 separate words, and VERY loud. They used to make everyone practice saying it in the right way. We always used to laugh about it because they were so engrossed in their own conversation when riding that they probably didn't notice any car drivers anyway!

I have now moved my horses out of that village so I'm not sure if the thank you practices still go on, but if you want to send that rider down I can certainly give her an idea of how it works - I've had enough training :)
