Tarpaulin for hay

I need a new tarp as our hay has to be kept outside. Just wasted an hour looking at rubberised sheeting. Anyone got any good tips on knowing which is best to buy. Need one big enough for a Heston.

240gsm+ is nice and thick enough to be heavy, and not condensate too much, or get ripped easily by wind. Unsure if you want a small tarp for just one bale to feed under or a large tarp for a whole stack to be protected from rain?

If its just the one bale an outdoor table cover is the right shape, make sure you get one marked breathable.

i always put a pallet on top of the Heston bale before the tarp layer, helps with condensation

google "oversized pallet cover" you can get oblong tarps to fit

I found the largest tarp from B&Q or Homebase were large enough for a Heston bale. They aren’t expensive and do a good job of keeping everything dry. I’m using one that’s been out in the elements for three years and it’s only just starting to show signs of wear.

I just get them off amazon the thicker ones are better the really thin ones fray after a while then get holes.

Get some silage sheet if possible I always found it’s far more waterproof than tarpaulin

we bought a huge one on amazon.. not sure on make but it’s dark green and very heavy!

I usually double up the tarp's on the hay which helps a bit with condensation on the hay and also leakages.

I've taken home some curtain from an old curtain side lorry body at work recently. It's OMG heavy so really need it cut down to size for me to be able to handle it on it's own bit hoping it is a good cover this winter for my hay and less likely to blow off if it's not weighed down enough.

You need airflow under the tarp otherwise you get condensation and mould. A pallet on top of the hay and then your tarp on top of that, roped down so that the bottom edges of the hay are visible and have airflow around them on all 4 sides. If you're unlucky, a rat will decide the area underneath the pallet on top of the hay makes a marvellous RattyHouse and you'll find rat droppings and bits of carrot and apple there (I did!). And hay must be on top of pallets too for airflow underneath (and if you're unlucky, it will be RattyHouseNumberTwo or, if you're on grass, could even be AttemptedNewBurrow by Mr Rabbit.

A friend bought rubber pond liner. Totally waterproof and you can buy it in whatever size you need and it is good for years. You do need the pallet though to assist with airflow.
