Taste Test Bute v Danilon?

Sorry have no idea how to spell Danilon!! Any way I cant get my mare to eat Bute, I have to mix it in molasses and squirt it down her throat like a wormer. would any one know if Danilon is more edible?? obviously I will be phoning the vet later! I have had her 18 years & tried just about every thing - the reason I ask is because she is now 33 the vet suggested that she should start to have Bute every other day due to her arthritis. I had the vet out yesterday day as she has a big hock, that's why I was back on squirting duty yesterday but I cant do that long term shell soon get wise to it!

Have you tried putting the bute in a jam sandwich? Danilon is meant to be easier on their system if you have to give it for a long period (my mare is on it just now) but it is a bit harder to hide in a feed (on account of it being luminous yellow!) that said, my mare does eat it fine. Might be worth having a chat with your vet and getting a couple of sachets to try.

Danilon is definitely more palateble, but also more expensive

My Freddy would eat a satchet of Danillon straight from my hand. It's far more palitable, and actually a lot kinder on their system.

I would definately try that instead.

I have tried to mask it with just about every thing over the years, she now wont touch garlic coz she thinks i have hiden nasty stuff in, bless her heart, looks like ill be geting the Danilon!! funny thing is she has never been a fussy feeder an over weight Connie X, but my other horse slightly picky TB, loves the taste of Bute, he would like to eat it every day.

Many Thanks every one!!

Danilon is sweet - I know this as I managed to get some from my fingers to my mouth and it tastes like sugar.

Cairo used to have bute but now he is long term on 1 - 2 a day, I have changed to danilon as it is kinder to their body.

I get mine from vetscriptions on the web - £28 total and my vet is happy to give me prescriptions.

Wow that's worth knowing! is that for a box? She is also on Pergalide for Cushins, I get a prescription from the vets for that & take it to the Chemist so im sure they would be fine with that!

By the way, I made up some of your fly spray cant believe how good it is! so thankyou on twice

I had a similar problem with one of mine & the vet suggested giving half a sachet of bute per day rather than 1 every 2nd day - he ate it no problem and the vet said this was probably better as it was keeping a level in his system all the time rather than up and down with 1 every 2nd day.

Just a thought! Good luck!

Try keeping your bute in a fridge.

I don't know how its works, but most horses tend to eat it after its been kept in there!

Have tried the fridge in the past! but thanks any way, I know this has worked for friends though, I think my old girl is just to wise! Its supposed to take away the bitterness.

Danilon is definitely more tasty
the old boy at our yard would not go near bute with a barge pole, and his arthitis was really getting bad as he wouldnt eat the bute, but since he has been on Danilon, he has had a new lease of life, and eats it all

worth a try i would say

Yes it is £28 for a box and that includes delivery. They are fantastic - I fax the prescription to them after placing the online order and then put it in the post. I normally receive it the next day - can't recommend them enough.

Glad you find the fly spray works - I am now using the new improved version with bog myrtle - expensive but good if you have midge and SI problems. If you don't, then don't bother with it.

There is actually NO proven scientific evidence that it is easier on the horse's system than bute it is just the fact it is sugar coated that it is a more palatable choice to the horse.

Mine won't go near bute. Danilon is no problem, our vet said he's yet to have a horse refuse to eat Danilon! (I made him wait while I tested his theory!!!!)
