With all the dogs being stolen I getting really worried about mine. Which would you think is better tattoos or microchips, i'm thinking tattoos are visable so may be a detterant? They are adult dogs though - Never had them chipped as pups as the vet wouldn't do it.

Any suggestions any other good tips?

Thanks

Both. All our dogs have had both except the current youngster who is just chipped but I also have him DNA registered to my name to a breed registry.

Where I live microchipping is compulsory to obtain a dog license, which is also a legal requirement.

I've had dogs come through that were tattooed and the owners didn't know - few rescues look for them.
Have both but if only one have a microchip. I chip puppies from six weeks of age.

All my puppies are tattooed, the new owners then microchip. The tattoo will trace back to the breeeder ,which no microchip will, that is what I want..to know if any dog I bred is in rescue anywhere, then I can go and collect to rehome myself.
My stud dogs have to be chipped if they are going abroad, recently I was amused to watch my repro vet trying to find a chip on a dog that was sending semen abroad,it was down a foreleg. Chips can be removed, whatever anyone tells you, tattoos are permanent and removing an ear somewhat devalues a dog!
Both is the ideal, but firstly I choose the tattoo. It is what got my dogs home when eight were stolen, and I happen to know the thief was deft at taking out chips.

I've always tattooed since it first started. For the first time Evie's litter was chipped and tattooed, as I have been concerned that many dog wardens and rescues just scan and fail to check for a tattoo. I like the fact that the tattoo can always be linked back to me, although I believe it is possible to do this with a microchip too.

When tattooing first came about I had several adult dogs tattooed (in the ear, wouldn't think the thigh would be very easy). Although they did wriggle more than pups I think it was just because they didn't appreciate being restrained so tightly, it wasn't really a problem though, done in no time.

When my eight dogs were stolen way back ,the bull terriers and mini bulls were already tattooed, somehow I never thought my little terriers would be at risk.Anyway in that folowing week everything with a pulse was tattooed, alarms were fitted to every kennel ,leading to a masterbox in the cottage.Until that last was in place we slept in the kennels,it being a fact that thieves often return for a second hit soon after the first. Before that we did not have loose guard/attack dogs out at night ,we do now.Once you have been a victim it worries you maybe more than it should.ALL puppy buyers are told never to leave their dog unattended in a car if they go off shopping,we used to do that too!In fact one vet got the thumbs down because his business was beside a dodgey looking housing estate.
Until it happens to you it may be you will be complacent,afterwards..never!:(

Wow this thread has scared me slightly and I will be booking my pooch in for a tattoo! It never crossed my mind that somebody might steal my dog!

Right i am decided, both it is. My dogs are whippets and lurchers so in the 'at risk' catogary anyway! lol.
Any one know of tattooists in Nottingham area - dog ones that is, lol.

Actually, if dog get stolen and use the purpose of puppy farming, either would help because the likelihood that the dog would receive a medical care is slim. Sorry, this is a fact that my vet told me.
To be award if someone interest in your dog and ask load of questions. Just try to make false statement such as, dog is neutered, etc try to lower the value.
