Tattooing

Has anyone had their dog tattooed? I'm about to get a black spaniel. She has no white and no distinguishing marks at all. Obviously she will come microchipped, but with all the dogs being lost/stolen I wondered if I should have a bit of extra "back up". Thoughts??

All ours were done years ago. I do lots of ID checks and I found some of them very hard to read in older dogs (with pointy ears though).

My GSD had her inner ear tattooed as a puppy. It wasn’t the easiest thing to read but it was permanent when microchips weren’t used.

I always had my pups tattooed, the last litter had both tattoo and microchip. I do like the extra security but as CC says some can be hard to read, the secret I'm told is for the tattooist to use loads of dye. Freya's tattoo is pretty clear and she is now 9.

My first st.poodle was tattooed inside her Ear.....but vet said it would have been better in the inner thigh as the ear is more easily removed.?

Where do you get them done? Foxhounds are tattoed, I assume the huntsman does them. It is a good idea.

The National Dog Tattoo Register have a list of tattoo markers for each area, they have a Facebook page.

I've been thinking about doing this as well. I can't enjoy letting my pup off lead anymore it's such a worry

The breeder of my working line GSDs is a tattooist and so she tattoos all the pups she breeds herself.
