Tax on horses-Urgent

My main thought being if they do nothing to stop Franch horses coming in with possible EIA whoosit with the slack tripartite agreement being exploited by dealers in France and idiots here - why on earth should we pay to clean it up? Especially as if it hits us, the tax will do nothing to stop our horses being destroyed!

When will they realise we are normal hard up pet owners not toffs with bottomless pockets?

Might see if I can get to one but they are hours away from me.

I think this is wrong, do they think all horse owners are made of money, why are horses higher on tax than any other animal, when cows, sheep, pigs and birds have all had highly infectious dieseases in this country in the last 10 years and horses are still higher on tax

They are not all species are going to have their own ring fenced scheme so you pay the total amount for each species divided by the number contributing.
These contributions do not cover any compensation for loss of animals farmers are being forced into paying insurance to cover this but the biggest problem is no insurance company will supply this cover.
To be quite honest if the government is going in this direction why have they stopped with horses and not tackled cats and dogs etc which also have an impact on animal health expenditure.

I'm going to one near us. I was a passport identifier, and I know for a fact there are hundreds of horses with no passports tucked away in fields that nobody can see, so how are they going to collect the money? Is it only going to be the honest horse owners who have passports registered with NED, that is the question I'm going to ask.

That was exactly what I thought when I first heard about this - just as with passports, it's the honest owners who will have to cough up! They honestly think we're all made of money toffs, which is the main reason behind the hunting ban, too. Civil rebellion, I say, don't pay up! Though I'm in Wales so am ok...for the moment.

Precisely.

Until loopholes and backdoor importation without health checks is stopped there is very little point in these proposals even going to discussion.

I bet there are certain factions of horse owner who won't pay the tax and won't be pursued for it. Just like the don't have passports.

If they introduce the horse tax and they go lame will we have to SORN them?

I can't see that many amateur horse owners are going to be able to get to these meetings, most of us will be at work.

That's just what I thought.

How will they collect the money? Or is that a naive question? I'm assuming that horses with passports are going to targeted.

(BTW - I love the part where they say it costs around £15 to process an invoice.... If that is so, then they are going to be making a loss, unless I've got that bit wrong)

FGS how the hell can you get to York when you have meetings all day? Do they think we are all bored housewives?

Right, Defra getting a stinging email off me. Tossers. Like I can afford to take time off work for this! I'm too skint and not wasting holidays!

I wrote to DEFRA on 31st march re horses entering France WITHOUT passports and being given French passports.

They informed me a French resident from their offices in UK that all horses moving between member states had to be correctly documented.

This is of course Rubbish because there are no border controls now between member states so it is easy for horses to move from one state to another.

I have had two inspections of my farm by Ministry of Agrculture and the Department of Youth and Sport plus I have three visiting vets I have NEVER been asked to produce passports or any other paperwork for my horses two of whom were imported from Hungary.

I wrote to DEFRA in March because I learned that the biggest slaughter house in France was bringing in Spanish horses each week. We know that horses rescued from slaughter with no documentation are being issued with French passports.

DEFRA assured me that the Iberian Peninsula was free of Swamp Fever and did not represent a risk. There were no plans to end the tri-partate agreement!! Since then there have been two outbreaks in France.

If they are all feeling so complacent that the horse passport scheme works in a European Community without border controls - ask them why they feel the need to introduce this tax.

Well I've just registered for the 9th June meeting - hell, the info they wanted! Thankfully they stopped before they got to my vital statistics but - occupation, membership of organisations like NFU, CLA etc., address, e-mail, dietary requirements (for sandwich and drink - generous lot), disability (for access) etc.

I will be having far more than just a word to say on the day!! If this goes ahead it will hit horse breeders hard, particularly as this year we have to microchip all the b**** foals, as well as passports (and passports cost me £30, +£10 for DNA testing, plus about £40 for the vet to do the ID/DNA!!) I'd guess microchips will add an extra £40 at least - and then this nonsense!!

the cruelty and neglect will get alot worse if this ludicrous claptrap is introduced. yet more equines will be dumped, dead or alive, more will be left untreated through lack of funds and so it will go on!! is this what DEFRA wants? their dealing of the foot and mouth was bad enough!!

Has anyone thought about why DEFRA are doing this? It can't be cost effective. Dog licensing was abandoned many years ago because it was too expensive to administer. If I remember correctly that was a £6 fee many years ago.

The only logical reason that I can come up with is that they want to know where horses are in case of a disease outbreak so that they can cull them.

if this is the case i'd like to see them try!!!!lol- they(DEFRA)wouldn't have a hope in hell of achieving such a thing. culling herds and flocks is one thing(they did that in the most cruel and heinous way) but equines? don't think so!!

If they were all passported (and let's face it only passported horses will be charged the tax) then DEFRA will already know where the horses are should they want to cull them for any reason.

As a dairy farmer, I wasn't even aware of this new tax for our herd of 250 cows. Eeeek! I'm more worried about that cost at the moment than £42 for my four neds.
