I have the vet coming tomorrow anyway but my 9 year old tb isn't quite himself at the moment and was hoping someone might be able to shed some light.

He is stabled overnight and out in 10 acres during the day, exercised 5 times a week and in the past couple of years has been in good health. His legs have started to fill overnight and make him look quite stiff and awkward in the mornings but they do clear through the day. I have put wraps on him in the stable for the past couple of nights to try and help but his legs are still filling and he is left with quilt imprints on his legs so Ihave since left them off.

He is also drinking alot more than normal - he has a big trug of water overnight and would normally drinking 2-3 inches out of it put again over the past week or so has been pretty much clearing the trug and as a result been very wet in his stable.

He also is normally quite a bright eyed sparky interested horse and there is just something missing at the moment and he has been seen today lying down in the field quite alot which is quite unusual for him. He is fully clipped out at the moment so I can't tell what his coat is like but it still seems in good nick.

Sound like virus or something else ??

Thank you in advance

:D

If you do not find an obvious answer from your vet, make sure that they do a test of kidney function. Kidney failure is rare in horses and mine went undiagnosed for over six months because the vet just never thought to test for it.

I hope it is something simple.

Yeah would get your boy kidney function tested altho there can be many reasons for this.

My boy had excessive drinking earlier in the year but lack of urination, swollen legs, sheath and under belly and runny poo. It turned out to be a IBS kind of issue and took months to diagnose. From what we have gathered it has now settled down due to weather changing so looks like it something he eats in the summer months :-/

Hope you get to the bottom of it. x

well vet has been and the horse did his best 'help me I am actually dying!; impression for the vet. He took bloods - results tomorrow morning ,took temp, resps and pulse all of which normal. Thinks it is probably viral as if infection anywhere he would expect a raised temp of some description but his is dead on normal. Was a little pale though in his membranes so has given him a general iron/min/vits injection to give him a bit of a temp boost and then will go from what the bloods tell him - he did mention the insurance word though eek! :(

My Mare - also a delicate tb :) - is also not quite right at the moment. It started on Sunday afternoon when I noticed she was lying down but hadn't finished her haynet (she is a pig so that is an obvious sign of something being wrong!) and she gradually got more lethargic and stopped eating. Her temp was normal until last night where it was raised slightly. All her other vitals are fine so vet gave her a shot of bute last night and a couple of days of danilon and we are giving it 24 hours to see how she is. She was very perky this am and eat her breakfast but was subdued again this aft until she got to go out and graze. She is in now and looks much better but is still only picking at her hay. Keeping a close eye on her - thank God we live on the yard - and if not happy tomorrow then vet will come do bloods.

Vets have said that they are seeing a lot of this at the moment, they believe due to change of seasons, the grass changing and weather conditions - especially the temp dropping so considerably. They have been very reassuring.

Heres hoping my Stinky Pink Pony and your lad are both back to their lovely TB selves soon! :)

a quick update - pony has had his second haemo15 )I think) injection today and I think I can see a little sparkle back - still drinking lots and legs are still a little swollen in the morning but hopefully we are on the mend now :D as I am seriously missing my riding
