This TB mare we got Sunday, has always been ridden in a bungie. I am thinking of riding her this weekend if she goes well on lunge and seems fairly tame

however i'd rather not use any training aids on her but do you think i should put her in the bungie as it sounds like that is what she is used to?

She has a rather ewe neck could the bungie possibly be the cause of this?

Am a little apprehensive as last time i rode her (2yrs back) she was a little mad! I dunno maybe she's changed in those 2yrs ay....

Start as you mean to go on - ditch the bungie and just take it easy. So long as you take time to get to know her again you should be fine. It sounds like the bungie wasn't doing a very good job anyway if she's got a ewe neck. I'd try and encourage her to stretch down and over her back as much as possible to start with, so she gets used to a bit of freedom again

Good luck

I agree with jumpthemoon - back to basics.

If she has an ewe neck then the bungie was probably put on to eradicate that - but if she has always been ridden in it then it hasn't done much good has it!! perhaps lunge her first, encouraging her to work over her back and take it from there. even if it takes a couple of weeks.

If it was me I'd be really wimpy about it - I'm getting on my mare tonight for the first time in 18 months (she's been going on the walker to start building her up) but all I will do is walk around the manege letting her stretch for the first few days. This is partly to try and build her up slowly in fitness and conficence, but it's also partly cos I'm a wimp and dont want to push for too much before I've got the feel of her again

If you're worried, put a long standing martingale on so she can't accidentally whack your nose but can't tell it's there otherwise, and use the neck-strap for anchorage.
It doesn't sound like the bungie achieved much, so go with your instincts!
I wonder what you'll find was the cause for the neck/use of the bungie? Good luck and keep us posted...

Oh she's always had the bungie on her ever since she was broken at 4yo.

Only time as far as i know that she's not had it on was when jumping or fun ride things.

I am being a bit wimpy about it!

I don't ride dealers and nutters anymore like i used to

! I've got quite happy and comfortable riding my two sane horses that i know inside out!

I'm like that! Sometimes if i go down to Cornwall (or, like last week, it was too wet!

) and he hasn't been ridden for a week then i'll lunge him for a bit (but he is a moose on the lunge) then get on and walk around for a bit!

Haha! I do that too, but mines a monster on the lunge so it just makes me even more worried about getting on! Daft really

But after walking round for a bit I usually feel much better

Why has she had a bungie on since she was broken???

I don't know.... ? Her previous owner put it on her when she was breaking her in, wasn't my place to say anything, horse and previous owner moved yards obviously kept riding her in it and now the horse has come back to us!

I'm not really sure? Previous owner was all for training aids.

Even less sure where to start without! Start all over again i suppose!

Am supposed to be having a lesson again with Blue at the weekend am tempted to ask instructor to stay an extra 30 mins or so to help with this mare?

I think thats a very good idea, that way she can watch her way of going without the bungee and maybe help point you in the right direction...

I used to ride a horse who was constantly ridden in draw reins by a novicey rider, it wasnt a pleasant ride..

I think theres a time and a place for training aids tbh... Good for you for starting over again with this mare!!

Am not sure we'll get any further than walk and maybe a bit of trot though but its a start i suppose.

As stated above am being wimpy about this as have got comfortable riding my two both of which i know inside out!
