TB keeps throwing its left shoe

A friend of mine and a 16 hh TB gelding. He only has front shoes and keeps throwing the left - every 2 weeks.

He wears over reach boots when he goes out in the field and when bei g ridden, he doesn't over reach.

Any help and advice would be very much appreciated :-)
 
If it were mine i'd get a bodyworker of some kind eg.. chiro, oesteo to check him out and if they find nothing then maybe a lameness workup, rather than looking at ways to keep the shoe on it would be better to look at why he's losing the same one time after time.
 
I said about the side clips and he has:had them - the farrier took the shoe off then replaced it and it had to be smended as the horse wasn't happy with the fitting afterwards - which explains the recent loss may be :-(
 
(ahem) - Full lameness workup, changed diet, barefoot with hoof boots till the wall improves, if not permanently if successful, and keratex hoof hardener. Hope that helps . xx
 
My horse did this 2 always left front wore over reaches 24/7 had fab feet so I put a fetlock ring/ sausage boot on that leg & problem solved!
He wad pulling it off with his right front & hind legs 2 so ring stopped these legs getting close 2 shoe & (touch wood) i've only had 1 replaced in 9mths now
 
Could it be from just playing in the field, the tb i share loves to do sharp turns and when grass weather etc changes looses shoes a lot. Simply because when she does a sharp turn its on such a small area.
 
Mine is doing this and following advise on here we are going barefoot on friday, farrier doesn't know yet, but I have ordered boots and am going to print off all he needs to know from www.barefoothorse.com if he us unwilling to be helpful I will get someone else to do them, but I am going to explain my reasons to him for being glad to get shoes off.

My WB started throwing shoes when he was 10, he was shod short in the heel by that farrier in order to stop the shoes being torn off, the result was after 6 months I had a horse with navicular.

If my hanovarian mare hadn't been wearing shoes when she hurt her self in the field she would be here today, instead she died as a result of the infection, her hoof and pastern were so badly damaged she actually had stones in the bottom of the hoof capsule, and this from slamming down with the other shod foot whilst getting up from a roll with some gusto.

So here I am with my little TB mare throwing her shoes, I would have to be dumb not to pick up on the signals, and try to get her out of those shoes, farrier has already said he wants to shoe her short!!!!! she has contracted heels, which he seems to think is a permanent thing, needless to say I know it might be hard to convince him, that £35 for the fronts he charges will be reduced to £10 for the fronts to be trimmed, I also have a funny feeling that the dishing she started to do when he started shoeing her will stop but I'll let you know!
 
Thanks for the tips - my friend has the farrier coming this week - sorry to hear of the hanovarion snopuma - that's terrible :-(. Hope u get on ok with the farrier - I hope he's as good as mine with the best approach for the horse irrespective of price :-)
 
Is the breakover correct on the hoof that loses the shoe?

If the hoof is long in the toe, the breakover becomes later and the horse can't get the hoof off the ground as quickly as it should. This often results in lost shoes because the delay means that the hind hoof often catches the back of the shoe as the horse walks.
