hi, iv bought a TB about 4 months ago now, he's done a bit of sj when he was younger but had a 3 year break...and im bringing him back into it now doing BN's. he jumps 1m05/1m10 at home fine and seems brave etc.

but iv heard that TB dont make too good sj-ers because their conformation is longer etc so dont get that ''short bouncy canter'' sj-ers need for good jumps, (like my other horse hu is a warmblood x hannoverian so can do this good canter) is this a load of rubbish about TB's?? or is there some truth in it??

xxx

Complete load of rubbish! TBs come in ALL shapes and sizes, and until recently you saw more TB blood than anything else in some of the best eventers of all time (OK, OK, and a dash of Irish

)

I am reschooling an ex racer at the moment and he is possibly the most scopy horse I have ever sat on. He is unbelievably careful and on sunday we were doing canter poles into a 3'6'' upright and being rather full of himself after a few days off was taking off after the final canter pole (ie one canter stride before the jump) and clearing it by miles and didn't take a pole with him. He has been over 4'9'' with a complete numpty on his back(ie me!!

) and it just felt sooo easy. It's true I have found it hard to get a good canter with mine but it is coming I just think it's not as natural to a tb as to a warmblood but my tb's confo is very long and rangy so think this contributes. Would deffo not discount tb's when jumping as if you can get them to go correctly they are fab !!! also second whatyou said about brave can put anything on or around my jumps and he won't give it a second look.

some shots of him jumping these were about 3ft ish and it was summer *sigh*

What a load of tosh !
Tb's do come in all shapes and sizes (see my example below) and are more than capable of sj canter !!

This is Danny , When he was out SJ , I was always asked what breed he was and the usual guess wasn't TB

Well heres my full TB (bred for Point 2 Point and is 16.3, no-one has ever guessed hes TB including vets and fariers!!!)

And this shows he can pick his feets up!

My TB is an ex racer and possibly had one of the shortest backs ever! He has so much power in his back end its unreal. The biggest i've jumped him is probably around the 1.35 mark (on very rare occasions!) and he really doesnt seem to have to put much effort in at all, though he had nearly jumped me off on a couple of occasions
grin.gif

He is also very careful, usually jumps clear and may have a pole at most so they are great showjumpers!!
ETA : to show how careful he is!

Awesome horse, f-h, how is he bred?

Re the comment that TBs do not make good SJers- that is a VERY annoying/short sighted thing to say

A lot of racehorse stallions have featured very very closely in International SJ breeding over the last 50 years.

I wish people would get over their 'breed' racism- saying that this breed is that, that breed is this...every horse is different and unique. Have ridden a few grade A showjumpers ( only schooling, mind
smirk.gif
) and I swear that all the racehorses Ive ridden had a better canter than those showjumpers did.

friendly_horses and _flic_ both your TB's are GORGEOUS!! haha, mines the one on the left of my signaiture
smile.gif
not jumping too big atm...but yea, hopefully he'll be doing bigger if he ca take me there
smile.gif
i was just curious about TB's being sjers! haha xx

Thank-you again

He is by Sula Bula and out of a Roman Warrior mare so according to this should onlt have been 16.1hh max and been wild with a firery temperment, however he is a gentle giant and far to soppy

This is my full TB - he used to be a pure SJ, up to Foxhunter.

Totally depends on the horse. I've seen some warmbloods that were pretty rubbish at SJ and some TBs that were superb.

Why thankyou very much

Fancy adding him to you collection? Or anyone else infact?

My TB is an ex-racer & is proving very capable showjumping. The main problem we have is nothing to do with the canter & more to do with my awful competition nerves. He's a star at home but I seem to cause him to freeze in the ring. I think he's quite 'typical' of a TB in his confirmation. I was told by someone just after I bought him that he was too straight in the hocks to jump. Some people just don't seem to like TBs.

I think that often the problem is trainability, TB often take more time and often take a more talented rider, however when they are good they can be very good. unfortunately the reverse is also true.

indeed american bred and off the track i seem to recall. and talking of americans what about Gem Twist? i thought he was TB. there have been a few.

My first horse was off the racecourse, 'Lombard' out of 'Privy Councillor'. She was 5 and I was 14, I took her to grade B, then when I left school and went to Lionel's at 16,my mum sold her and she evented for another 8 years in our area!!!!
She was ace! Typical, skinny, chestnut mare, massive ears and canter!!!!

My girl is 7/8th TB and I was told recently her canter was too short and pretty for decent SJ and I had to up it significantly
crazy.gif

She certainly isn't short in the back.

Rubbish!!

My Tb is very short coupled and is the scopiest, most careful horse I know. She hates to touch a pole and has a very bouncy canter!

My thoroughbred ex-sprinter won many races in his hayday, but seems to jump perfectly well.
He's also by puissance and is half brother to to Matthew Wright's 3* eventer Hugginstown as well as michael ryan's badmintion horse old road.
So yeah thoroughbreds can jump perfectly well if they can clear badmintion fences
laugh.gif

Tb's are typical all rounders. My lil man is a very cusious yet big jumper hes great at s/j beacuse he can clear the fences and yet hes so care full at leaving them standing.
