TB x Welsh Sec D. Anyone got one?

I ride one at our yard and she is lovely. Bit of a prat at times like dancing sideways when asked for canter :rolleyes: Goes much better for a confident rider that will tell her what to do rather than a more nervy one who asks politely :p Once she decides she likes you will call to you and follow you round the field even if you don't have treats :p :D
 
Well this fella is certainly intelligent.

Yesterday he was very interested and inquisitive about me (probably the first man he's met), but did not want me to get too close to his side. Today within a minute and with the aid of a couple of treats, he was allowing me to scritch his withers and run my hand right up his neck. Then, with his head in a bucket being held by my OH, eating some treats, I was able to put my arm right over his neck and also able to mimic the movement of passing a headcollar or rope around his neck.

This guy catches on fast and really enjoyed the attention...oh, and the treats :D

Looking at him today, he is going to make 16 hands easily, probably more...nice!

Do you know if he's registered as a WP-B, and who his parents are? be interesting to know.

His passport was issued with the Welsh Pony & Cob Society,

His sire is: General Gambul (TB) and his dam is Waltersgay Replica.

I know the breeder and she does not like big horses and he is definitely going to be BIG.

For now, the arrangement is that I will help with training, but I know he is for sale. Come the spring, we may move him to our paddocks, but as he is being kept 100 yards from ours, it's no hardship to walk to where he is and work with him there.
 
Here's our boy... My sister used to work at a friends of the familys yard in the summer. And all the girls got given a foal that year :)

So we were given Quest as a yearling :)

He's father was a Welsh D & his mother was TB

Very easy to break in, very good allrounder! When he's a good mood he'l try his little heart out, but can also be a cheeky lil sod! When he didn't want to do something he would root to the spot, and nothing would move him lol.. but no malice in him at all! He loved jumping very much!

I found he's a horse that needed plently to do, he's always moving or wiggling, and got stressy if left in for too long with bad weather.

He is now retired at 10yrs, he's unfortunely got TB feet so very flat! And navicular :(

I miss riding this boy alot!

I did a lot with a TB/Welsh D gelding far too many years ago now! He was only 14hh but was one of the toughest, most honest and most talented ponies I have ever met. He was also one of the most opinionated :D.

I had him on loan to do endurance with and discovered that the best way of acquiring brakes was to go above 40 miles as soon as we were qualified to do so. He learned that I would trust him to go at his pace unless there was a reason not too, so that if I said slow he did - at least long enough to see why and decide whether he agreed. From that point I never felt unsafe on him. He worked through the grades in one Spring to qualify for and go to do the 100 miles at Golden Horseshoe that year - something I have never considered attempting with another horse. Once there, he gained a silver award and attracted strong interest from the international selectors. Unfortunately his owner wouldn't sell and wanted him back. He didn't compete very much after that but did some trans-Wales rides with her.

He eventually died well into his 30's having barely encountered a vet, other than for routine work.

Still has a very special place :D

Oh that's even better if he's registerd with WPCS, then if you get to ride him he could be entered for their performance awards, well those of the Welsh Part-Bred Horse Group, if they still hold them. I wonder if his dam had Derwen Replica in her?

(even more good looking part-breds posted; such intelligence in their heads; or working out next challenge to owner!!)
 
I've known/ridden two. They couldn't have been more different.

The gelding was an absolute sweetheart, safe, friendly and lovely to ride. He looked more Welsh D than TB.

The mare, who looked more TB than Welsh D, was possibly the horse I have most disliked ever in my life. It was quicker to name the vices she didn't have than the ones she did, and she was stressy, rude and accident prone as well.

So I'd say it depended entirely on the individual horse!
 
well i can only assume thats what mine is - sold to me as TB x cob x shire

shes opinionated, spooky, fast, nappy, cheeky, very friendly, a good dooer, a great jumper, lazy on the flat (unless shes legging it from something!), strong, just typically welsh really with abit of the hot headedness of TB's thrown in. You cant pressurise her, you have to ask nicely or you just lose cos she throws her toys out of the pram and knows exactly how to wind me up! I love her to bits and would never swap her - I would quite like to breed from her with a pure section D though to get something a bit chunkier!

i've got 2 pure Welsh D's and a Welsh Cob x TB (by TB stallion Hipu Who out of a Welsh Cob mare Sancar Savannah who was by Tirclyn Flyer) I would say the part-bred is very much like the pure breds except he's more athletic and a damn sight faster! They're all 15.1hh-15.2hh but the part bred is a bit leggier. He can be just as stroppy as the pure breds when it takes his fancy and he's bloody sharp, but he's a nice chap like the other 2, no malice in any of it. He's 11 and I've had him 3mths and already we've gone clear and been placed at 90cm hunter trials and SJing and he's a fabulous hunter. Just gotta improve his dressage now and then we should be up for some eventing next season. He has an impressive record at Pre-Novice from 5yrs ago so hoping we can get there again! He's on the RHS in my signature.
 
Here`s my 2yo Beau, Northern dancer lines on sires side and Horeb Euros on his Dams. He can get stroppy, loves to throw buckets out of his stable :D but generally a nice guy, loves people and is very affectionate.

16.1hh of D xTB. He's opinionated, spooky, sensitive, complicated, beautiful, talented and not one nasty bone in his body. He is by no means the easiest horse by a long shot but he's all mine :D We bought him for showjumping, doing up to newcomers but after a few falls we turned our toes to dressage and we completed our first medium last weekend :)

Thanks hes fun as heck and if you have a look at my snow pics thread you will see us having a canter in the snow with me holding a camera lol!!!

Hes still cheeky and opinionated but over the years we have gelled with each other and I trust him more than i have trusted any other horse.

He looks very similar to the chap I am working with. Very nice indeed.

She's definately all of the above, a true contradiction in many ways.... - can be a stroppy old moo but has the heart of a lion. She doesn't suffer fools gladly but once the trust is established, will follow you to the ends of the earth. Has the paces of a pony (despite being 16hh), but the general carriage of a horse.....
To be honest it took about a year to get to know each other, but know we truely are a team :-)
Brace yourself for an interesting journey but truely worth it in my opinion.....

My mare is by General Gambul out of a Welsh D x ID mare. She has good points and bad points! Lol!

Good points
Moves well, nice paces and capable of doing dressage to any level I would want to go to
Jumps anything, bold and very scopey
Kind, sweet and very affectionate
Nice looking and well put together - leg at each corner but in proportion
Thrives on work, very bright and learns quickly

Bad points
Very opinionated!!
Can be sharp or can be a plod depending on her mood
Can buck like the best of them
When she doesn't want to do something she is very stubborn and will throw all of her toys out of the pram

To be honest there have been times where she has scared me to death and times where i have had more fun than on any other horse! I have had her for almost 5 years and it is only really now that I am finally working out the right buttons to press. Owning her has been a rollercoaster - but she is the most amazing horse I have ever had and I adore her. :)

Edit to say: I do have better pictures of her but not on this computer. If you want any more info let me know. I have a bit of a background on General Gambul and know that his offspring are usually pretty intelligent but usually quite sharp and opinionated! There are a few of his babies on here! :)

Well, I really do know what I am getting myself into here, glad I have not (yet) offered to buy the big luggins.

Lucy-Ally your mare has almost identical colouring and markings, but the big chap only has two white socks.

There have been times where I would have jumped at the offer to 'move her on' - like the two times she has put me in hospital! Lol! But having found a fabulous yard and trainer, she is a reformed character (touch wood).

I will bear your offer in mind though :)

I've felt like that a few times but think we have finally worked each other out now but has taken me 2 years!
 
I had one on loan (15.2hh) and she was a fabulous horse. Very well put together and very talented and clever although could be very stubborn (although she was a chesnut mare so this might have something to do with it!). I'd have loved to have found one when I was looking for a horse but they seem few and far between which is a shame because the welsh x tb is a lovely mix. Now I have a tb and a welsh cob so not quite the same but I am a fan of both breeds.

Hi Laur - may be I should have started a new Thread, but not sure of etiquette around this!

Dont know if this is of interest - Incase you or any one else is ever looking for this cross, a good starting point is the Welsh Pony & Cob Society who'll probably point you to http://www.welshpartbredhorses.co.uk (I'm not involved these days). There are competition horse breeders who specialise in this cross, they wont all be registered with the society, but there are half-bred stallions too that people use to put to TB and other types of mares.

Not good to think you couldnt find what you were looking for! But sounds as if you have the best of both worlds with a tb and a Welsh Cob.
