My TB mare has got to live out for this week as her stable is being re done. What rugs would you reccomend I put on her?

Choice between: heavy turnout (with detachable neck), light turn out, fleece and cooler.

It's warm and sunny here but might rain. She is very warm blooded.

Thank you :)

lightweight she doesn't want to cook!! my TB mare is out today in a lightweight (with absolutely no fill and a very light material) and she was hot in that.

Mine is out 24/7 and is living in his fly rug atm, although he's had it off a couple of times over night when we've had showery weather and no flies. If it were to rain heavily overnight I'd put a lw on her but the rest of the time surely she'll be fine naked? It's pretty warm atm even when it's raining!

Thank you :) Was just worried that she would get cold as I don't think she's lived out before. I'll put her lightweight on if I can catch her!

I would just bob a breathable light weight on if there is a drop in temp or cold hard rain and make sure its on at night even if its not on during the day.

I ride out a couple of times a week for a trainer, all the horses that were in training during the winter are all turned out without rugs, its june and these horses are worth thousands, good enough for them, must be ok for yours. Also we are in the North. Why would you want to encumber a horse with a rug in the summer???

I know several TB's who live out naked 24/7 and are absolutely fine - and much healthier for it!

Itr's really warm out - even when wet but as she's not used to it I'm sure she woukld like a lightweight on over night.

I live in the North of Scotland.
My TB is currently out unrugged & has been since early May.
It's been raining most of the day & she is no worse for being unrugged.
I would rather her be out unrugged as she spends enough time in the winter heavily rugged up.
XxX

I agree, it is soo warm - it is june and you are thinking of putting a h/w rug on your horse - I dont even use a h/w in snow!!!! thats rediculous! my horses have been naked since 2 months ago and I dont plan on using any rugs until at least november!! My uncles extremely well bred Hanoverians worth thousands of pounds are turned out all year with no rugs, and they are always in the best condition!! x

I'm in Newmarket too and we've got a few fillies out of training that are now integrated into the barren band naked. Our girls are naked all year round and are fine. My friend was in this situation a few weeks ago with her ex racer and was worrying herself silly she now has seen sense, turned him out without a rug and he is loving it!

Dont be so quick to judge! agree a hw is too much, but if the horse isn't used to it and the weather is so changeable then I would personally prefer to stick a l/w or rain sheet on. The horses at our yard that are going out over night/live out are still not in a fixed routine - they are rugged/left naked depending on the temp last thing and mine has some 3 alternatives for nightwear atm!

Thanks everyone :)

She's in a LW and seems fine. If she's too hot in the morning and has sweated lots over night she will probably go naked tomorrow. If she's cold I may add a layer under the LW.

To people who have 'super expensive' horses living out naked all year, good on you. My girly isn't used to staying out so I'm just making sure she will be ok. :D
