TBs

My apologies, I thought the OP wanted to know roughly what you would pay for a TB thats a "nice horse thats done a bit, hacks out on own and in company, jumps nicely, has been reschooled and is good to shoe, box, clip, catch". I didnt realise it needed to have hunted for a number of seasons or had a child on its back.

If you've paid £200 for a horse that does all the above, then I'm very impressed. And seller must be bankrupt!!!

I sold an ex racing TB for 2.5 k (bought for 1.5k 3 years earlier from a racing yard) he had evented to BE novice with me, was schooled v well, bombproof in traffic and fields and incredibly easy a child rode him on occasions! So laid back I had to feed him pure oats! He passed a 5 star vetting but had a tendon injury in his past. I bought him as a my first real project horse and he taught me alot! However he spent months lame and had bad feet none due to his tendon either! which I know any horse could have but it was incredibly frustrating, and some ex racers have done alot of work already before they are reschooled. My next project was a similiar stamp nice ex hurdler, legs were fine etc bit psycho but could jump, turned out he had really bad scarring on the inside of his legs, which you could not see from the outside, so he could only be a hack! Yea it happens with buying horses I know and I do agree that you sell a horse according to temp etc. Tbs have however got a bad reputation, they can be incredibly safe and lovely, however the sheer amount of lameness and bills has put me off! After all of the vets bills from 2 ex racers, I now have a full connemara pony!

I havnt read all the post so sorry if this has been covered.
Putting aside the fact thats a TB. The things i would question for a horse at this price is what do you want to do with it? Yes its hunted and XC but if you want to do anything else ie. schooling dressage SJ as i dont think this horse has had any retraining as such espeacailly to go by its muscle tone. Im very sceptical aswell looking at adverts, is it living out to keep it sane, if your going to stable the horse at night will it go insane. I think if youve got a 3000-3500 budget you could get alot more for your money. Ive been looking for a friend shes 14 and looking to do all PC and some affiliated showjumping and shes been looking in this price range and theres quite a few about that are also younger, with more experience.

I am firmly in the camp of 'a good horse is a good horse irrespective of its breeding'. Here is my TB - an ex racer, shock horror :O

baz2.jpg

He's 3 years out of training, officially 10yo this year and has good breeding and a decent(ish) record on the track (did not race until 4). Since I have had him he has won and been placed unaffialliated SJ up to 1m (scope to go on - and hopefully will do this year), dressage over 60%, wins or placed everytime out XC up to 1m, won competitive Working and Ridden Hunter classes. Hacks out brilliantly on own and in company and is good to handle - but pulls horrid faces when being groomed.

I know what I think - but do others think his value is affected very adversly because he is a TB?

DISCLAIMER: Not for sale and hopefully never will be for sale so not advertising - just curious re people's opinions on TB/ex-racer value.

Now that is a proper example of a reschooled/retrained racehorse. I think theres a big difference between this and the horse the Op has seen advertised.

I paid £1500 - nice temperament, 7 year old, mare. Great canter, awful trot, willing jumper. Hacks out alone or in company and totally chilled. Pretty but only 15.1hh - stil, I do love her!

Cazzah how is he bred? He looks like mine without the white bits! I would say he would be valued at £4k ish, who cares if he's raced if he does all that?!

Also aren't grumpy faces during groooming the norm? :D Although funnily enough a good scratch behind the ear or on the withers isn't greeted with half as much stroppiness!

I suppose TBs are considered to be worth less because of supply and demand- there are always loads of them coming out of racing so the price goes down.

Added to that the ex-racers tend to be quite high mileage and this can lead to health problems in the way that any ex-athlete will often have injury problems. This lowers the price as buyers are put off by the risk.

Plus TBs in general are not cheap to run as they tend to be poor doers and often have poor feet (especially ex-racers that are shod so often when racing) which also costs extra. This lowers the price again as people are put off by the additional costs.

Then a lot of people are put off by the fact that TBs have a reputation for being mad and difficult, which lowers the price again as people don't feel confident with this type of horse.

Not a reflection on how good the horse in question is, only on how the breed in general is perceived, and the numbers of horses available compared to the number of people prepared to buy one.

Go and have a look at him!

Then you can see if he's worth that amount of money!

The only way you are going to know really :)

I agree with the statement made earlier 'a good horse is a good horse, irrespective of it's breeding'

Might turn out to be worth every penny, might turn out not to be.

You'll never know unless you go see him :)

Dizzle, he's by Mark of Esteem x a Busted mare. Siblings on both sides are G1 winners and he had a couple of decent results racing but turned sour. He was kept as a stallion until nearly 7 which I think has contributed to some of the grumpiness. That said, he is vastly improved since he stopped racing - and does indeed love a scratch behind the ears :D

NSOD, I understand where you are coming from and think that is a lot of people's perception too. I wasn't looking specifically for a TB when I bought mine - I bought him for his attitude to work (and jumping!). He was all of the stereotypes you mention when I bought him, to a greater or lesser extent, but with time has changed. He is shod every eight weeks and keeps his shoes well, in winter he is unshod behind - and last year was turned away unshod, unstabled all winter and came back in spring fat and chilled. He racked up a few vet bills when I first had him, mainly I believe to him being 'run down' during/after racing; he has only seen the vet for jabs in the last two years (touches wood frantically). He cost a fortune to get up to weight initially and now lives a mainly forage, with a little balancer, chaff, cubes and oil.

In short, I think that my experiences have shown that the sterotypes are mainly correct in the first instance but with time and management he needs no more or less than any other horse. If more people looking at TBs could understand this then I think that the right (i.e. most suitable) people would be looking at and buying them.

I'd have another in a heartbeat.

I'd look at it like this, how much are you willing to pay for a horse that does as described (in that add) and if it ticks all your boxes?

The fact that it's a TB (not that particular horse in the add, I just mean TB's in general) to me wouldn't really come into it, if you are wanting a good safe alround type of horse with absolutely no hang ups, reasonable good confo and passes a vetting (of your choice) with flying colours, then around 3k is a reasonable buy for a large horse, even if it's a TB, a good TB is worth every penny just like any other breed of horse, why people assume they should be a grand cheaper just becuase it's a TB is something I'll never grasp, but that's just me. :)

What she said! :)
