I'm just curious as to whether people can advise or have previous experience of this ??

I bought a Hungarian warmblood x Lippizaner out of the Furioso lines last summer and adore him - we're really clicked and have had a great time hacking out and doing little bits together .... he's rising 11 years old and came with a bit of previous history ....
His previous owners imported him from Hungary as a 4 year old and he was broken to drive - they competed him as a pair in 3 day driving trials to quite a decent level but found he was becoming too strong and unruly whilst being driven, so he was then retired from driving and broken to ride (approx 3 years ago). He started his ridden career in dressage but the girl riding him was very slight and was advised he was too strong and to look for something else resulting in him being turned away in the field until some friends of mine acquired him in January last year ....

I'm aware that whilst going through his driving career he would not have done any jumping whatsoever and as far as i know he has not been jumped since been broken to ride .... i am interested in whether it would be too late to establish this with him ??

We have schooled over trotting/ canter poles with no issues - he didnt even look at them or try to run around them - only once was there an issue when the pole was raised, he tapped it and spooked at the noise causing a bit of unbalance etc ... (possibly more my fault too as i'm still relatively rusty riding wise after a 10 year break lol) I've also loose schooled him and he jumped fine over a 2ft upright - again not looking at it and actually showing a really nice shape ...

The only thing that makes me doubt is that on a couple of occasions out hacking we've had a bit of a mixed reaction to little jumps we've come across (tbh they probably weren't sneezing over lol) - one was a blocked in railway sleeper that he had to go over - and instead of stepping he jumped .... yet the log we came across he more ran out at it than jumped it ....

I'm just curious as to whether jumping would be too late to achieve ??

We've mainly schooled and hacked out - although we did do our first "stressage" competition in July and were placed 3rd in our class ....
i however, am no longer competitive and would just like to enjoy some hacking, small cross countries and a few days hunting .....

Any advice please ???

I have taught three driving horses to jump two where ten yo and one thirteen when I started them jumping they where happy to learn and enjoyed it.
All have taken to hunting and enjoyed the varied lifestyle, one is no longer driven but the other two (, one of them is dead now ) happily jumped and hunted along side driving

My dales x cob mare was driven before we bought her. She came 4th and 5th at MK 3 day event, and showjumps up to 1.10m. I think if you take it slow and introduce him properly, theres no reason why you cant jump :)

Good luck :)

Generally driving people don't teach their horses to jump, just to discourage the idea when they are doing driving competitions.

Depends on the horse - some are natural jumpers and are OK when they get the idea, some late starters never really get into it. No reason for your not to try!

As for driving horses not jumping - apparently my own horse's dam jumped a wall when being driven, ouch! Sadly she didn't seem to pass on the jumping gene to her offspring!

Thats great thanks guys - he's an absolute gem - although not everyone would agree lol ... I have really clicked with him and he does look after me ..

I would just love to find something for him to do and enjoy - I don't want to be jumping massive hedges or big uprights .... just to jump safely at a comfortable level .... and enjoy ourselves ....

The jumping thing is going to be our summer project so would be a gradual thing .... so hopefully from the sound of things it may be a positive move x

Ouch Orangehorse - i bet that was messy !!
I'm hoping with what positive signs we've seen he'll be ok - and the Furioso lines are supposedly good jumping lines - so with a bit of luck the jumping gene may prevail lol ...
