Im teaching my youngster to tie up, so far by having a long rope through ring and holding it. What is best to use to tie to? have looked at the bungee type things, but they look like they would not release in a emergancy. ate the rubber type tie loop things better?

the little ties you can buy snap really easily. I just use bailing twine, but my youngster is so easy that I just tied him up and that was it

I use a very thin piece of baling twine at first, but still also hold a lunge line fed through the tie up ring as well, and hold the lunge line. then tie lead rope to baler twine, that way if they pull back they haven't taught themselves they can break away. I worry the elastic things will flick if they pull them.

bailing twine!

i just tied my rising 2 year old up when i got her with a net and let her get on with it...!

she was fine as there was no fuss and she dealt with it :)

If you are going to use the thick large bale twine then it is too thick. The best thing is to separate about a third of the individual threads and use that as it will then snap if the horse really pulls back. The best thing with youngsters is for them not to learn they can pull back and get free. It sounds as though you are going the right way about it by looping a long rope through the tie ring and holding it. I've found that with youngsters who have been taught to lead they take very easily to learning to tie up.

I have never tied a horse to a breakable (intentionally breakable, that is) tie in my life. If you train them properly in the first place then they will not pull back; if you teach them that pulling back results in being free, then they will learn to do that. I start them as you are doing, with a long line through the ring and back to the hand, and I teach them to tie as foals. Then I use an inner tube, and at my yard we have solid rubber tie ropes that are 1 1/2" thick. They do have a breaking strain, but no horse I have ever owned has ever pulled back more than once. If a horse does panic a little tap on the bum sends them forward.

I use a ring from an old leadrope clip, tied up with baler twine. I have found that in an emergency the rope will slide through easily through the ring when the rope is released. I found the rope gets stuck just passing through the baler twine. I have had to release my youngster quickly a few times. He is now ok about being tied up, he has not learned he can get free as I still had hold of him.

I would use baler twine but not just a few threads as they will then learn they can pull back untl it breaks and clear off or get free. tie with normal baler twine with a quick release not, if they get into trouble you can undo it otherwise they learn to stand as you want.

I like this idea :)
