Could someone advise me of what insurance you need to teach freelance, on a yard that belongs to someone else.

Does it effect the insurance if you are not a qualified BHS Instructor.

Do you need to have payment change hands for it to mean you are actually teaching and not assisting on a friends basis and how would this effect the insurance ?

If the said teacher has no insurance and something was to happen, is there a possibility that the person being taught could claim from the public liability insurances thats held by the YO ?

Any other advise would be great.

Thanks :)

Can't help with 1st ques, no idea. My insurance is with the BHS reg of instructors

2nd ques. My insurance is only valid if I receive money. So if I was only helping friend, so I don't think I would be covered.

3rd ques. I'm surprised a YO would let a uninsured paid instructor on the premises. A lot do not, and have heard of others been demanded to show insurance cert. It would kinda depend on the nature of the accident? Were the facilities of the yard deemed to be at fault? If they were was it anything the instructor could have reasonably prevented anyway?

So if you were "helping" a friend on a weekly basis but not qualified would you be able to get insurance. ?

Would you risk helping someone on a regular weekly basis and not accept money as a token guesture that in the event something happened your insurace would hopefully cover you ?

Im not sure the YO knows the its normal for people who teach to have insurance.

well if your not excepting payment (even "in kind") how good is the friend? Do you think they would sue if you got them to do something that caused an accident and hurt them?

Yes you can get insurance if not qualified. But it's not cheap! If your not receiving payment you are going to be severely out of pocket!!

And my insurance company specificallt told me, when it came to schooling peoples horses (but don't know why it would be different for teaching) that I had to be receiving money for my insurance to be valid

That if you are teaching people you need insurance, to not be out of pocket you need to take money, and if your taking money you are definatly teaching them so need insurance.....does than make sense ?

and that standing in a school telling a rider what they need to do at least three times a week is clearly teaching not assisting a friends...... or is riding their horse

Freelance instructor insurance

Does it effect the insurance if you are not a qualified BHS Instructor.

It will affect the price the insurers are willing to quote you, insurance companies ask what qualifications you've got when you request a quote, and also generally ask if you've got a HSE first aid certificate too. You can get insurance without BHS qualifications though.

Do you need to have payment change hands for it to mean you are actually teaching and not assisting on a friends basis and how would this effect the insurance ?

Usual consideration is if something is done for "reward", that is generally money but could be goods or jobs done in return depending on the individual circumstances and the parties' intentions (real intentions when the action took place, not the story given after something has happened!).

If the said teacher has no insurance and something was to happen, is there a possibility that the person being taught could claim from the public liability insurances thats held by the YO ?

Yes there's a possibility, would depend on the circumstances.
