Teaching to lead from a horse

If they lead fine and are sociable enough, then there's not really any 'teaching' to it.

Top tip though - just make sure on the ground that they lead with you on the right hand side of them!

Tip is, having a quiet riding horse..if the one on the lead does play up,then you need your riding horse to remain sensible. I always to start with have my reins in one hand and the other horse solely in the other and keep it fixed down near my waist/knee until they realise the boundary for where they can go [ie, not going in front of the ridden horses shoulder, nor duck back behind him.] It's just really keeping them close enough to you - I prefer their head at or just behind my knee on a fairly short rope so they can't dive elsewhere.

I've always just gotten on and done it. With my little 2 year old colt, I'd taken him out in hand quite a bit on his own round the roads, followed by with another horse and someone riding, then this weekend I just took him out with me on a horse. Just held him, got on the other cob, and then off we went. Had a little trial in a big circle round the car park first just to check all was ok, then off we went :)

[it *should* be in a bridle obviously too, but I cannot stand horses being bitted up as babies and all his work he does, is in a headcollar anyway.]
