novice class caused plenty of problems especially at 1st fence loads of refusals jockeys on floor but the open class caused carnage 1st team to go cunning stunts 2nd fence lead horse fell and 2nd horse landed on him horse did not get up 2nd team to go wasps only 3 riders got to 13th fence jockey of floor but completed 3rd team lost a rider at 8th fence then 2 riders at 13th fence jockey still on floor after 25 mins paramedic assistance we decided had seen enough carnage and went home

When you said "horse did not get up" i take it he was killed??Flippin heck sounds terrible if the riders were on the ground for 25 mins?! What caused all this, was the ground bad?

it was the day from hell had 2 youngsters with me too 1st experience of team chasing i had warned them it is an extreme sport but did not expect the day we had

think you could be right the horse that fell 1st was really up for it very excited before they started and did not get the best jump at the 2nd fence he seemed to miss his stride could have been too fast

Thank you very much for your evaluations of Duggan's demise. He missed his stride, horses do. Yes there was speed involved, but rotational falls happen at all speeds. Dug was always 'up for it' as you say, he loved teamchasing and was one of the best horses i've ever seen across country. He didn't get up, but we gave him every chance and assistance to do so.
All horses are entitled to one mistake, he make his in spectacular fashion and it cost him his life.

Please don't tar teamchasing too much, it was a dreadful day for many and not how the sport should be seen. I don't think the ground/fences/speed were really to blame, although I feel some decisions on the course were not good ones.

Any loss is to be regretted, but it can happen anywhere, and doing anything. Anyone who has ever watched Duggan will know he adored what he was doing. RIP my Duggie Grub.

RIP Duggan, it is very sad to lose any animal but he at least went doing what he loved.

It takes a special kind of horse and rider to team chase xx

RIP Duggy, I only met him a few times but he certainly was a horse you wouldn't forget.

He was doing something he loved and you could tell he was enjoying every minute in that collecting ring.

Oh I am so sorry to hear about Duggan

I agree with you yeeharider, team chasing seems a good idea but my perception of it is a lot of people/horses taking break-neck chances.

I was there too doing my first novice, stayed around and decided the second fence would be a good place to watch the open, wish I hadn't as saw the whole horrible fall and aftermath. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it and just wanted to say to Duggan (?) how sorry I am for your loss, it was just one of those things, your horse was absolutely beautiful and it was obvious you did everything you could to try and save him. Really sorry again.

I'm so sorry that you lost Duggan saw a vid on YT the other day and he looked like a special horse. I hope T is ok. Accidents happen in all equine sports. What a loss, RIP lad.

Thank you all, Kate i'm sorry you had to witness it all. I didn't see the fall, just my lad down and out and Tony being pulled clear. I am so glad we tried what we did, although those watching took it the wrong way. I had to be sure that I was correctly making the only decision. Today has been horrendous. We are both devastated, and I know it will get easier with time I just can't stop the tears at the moment.
Anyone who wants to see Duggan at his best should watch this. Ears pricked, lovin' every minute.
Duggan rules supreme at the Atherstone 08

that video should b posted in the picture gallery as he looks pure class !!! and shows what a brilliant horse he was at his job. Losing any horse is not easy let alone the old friends, the decision must have been so hard and we only have one chace tomake it so it has t be right. today must have been so hard huge hugs !
