Does anyone here team chase? Im guessing not many but could anyone answer some questions for me?

I was told a few months ago that I could team chase with my horse but never considered it, but recently I had my PC camp and we got to jump 4'6 steeplechase fences from gallop so now I am seriously considering it now that I know we are capable and Im not so scared  :D

I was wondering what it actually entails, size of fences, speeds etc? Could someone please just give me a quick run down, and how to get involved.

Im 16, and my horse is 20 (a very fit 20!) so are there any special classes we can do to get into it (veterans etc)?

Thanks :D

Do you have any mates or something you could go with - Its great fun, and can get quite competitive! its like a 'mini' hunting day in the eyes of the horse, or XC with buddies, so can bring out some real confidence.

Well done on the 4'6" sounds crazy big! - I would see if you can get a 'I jUmped this picture' of you stood under it - You will look back at that later in life and recoil in horror!!!

Team chasing is one of the most exciting horse sports around at the moment, where teams of three or four horses and riders compete over natural cross-country courses all over the country. Often run by hunts, team chases are great rider and spectator events with courses for all abilities and friendly atmospheres.

At teamchasing.co.uk you can find the full team chase calendar, event details and entry forms, results and Chesterton Humberts National Championship information, M.F.H.A. (the sports governing body) rules and regulations and articles written by current and past competitors. If you’re just starting out or looking for a team, why not head to the team chase message board where members are more than willing to give advice on courses and how to get a team together.

Also look out for our new ‘course walks’, designed to give competitors a view of the courses.

It's great fun and if your horse jumps safely at speed then go for it! Teamchasing folk are really friendly, they have a forum which is probably a good place to find a team if you have trouble finding friends willing to do it (I never managed to persuade any of mine!)

You need a team of three or four (best three count), stops are not penalised, you just have to jump all the fences in the right order as fast as you can. Some courses have a pen where you should have twelve horse's feet on the ground inside the pen before anyone jumps out.

Novice - No fixed obsticles over 3'3 (in other words hedges can be bigger), length of course 1.5 miles.

Intermediate - No fixed obsticles over 3'9 (most are 3'6 though) course length 1.75 miles.

Open - Fixed obsticles are no less than 3'6, course length 2 miles.

Under 16's can only compete in bogey (optimum time) classes, and I think horses have to be over 15 hands for the bigger classes.

Good luck! :)
