Team leader doesnt understand

Nope. You obviously haven't ever had to scrap tooth and nail to get what is rightly yours. If you had you would understand more what people are trying to say.

...

I think perhaps you have only worked for nice companies. I left as a result of the way I was treated but not everyone has that option. And that was working as a 'professional' in a skilled job!

Seriously?

Thanks for the reminder why I will not go into biotech  Jesus

Current company and the one before that were and are totally amazing. I pretty much come and go as I please here. It's just pot luck really! I'm sure it's the same in most industries :)

I was in a job where it depended on your boss as to how the annual leave rules got interpreted. One was brilliant - let me say when I'd like to take it and there were no problems. At the other end of the scale I had a boss where if I so much as asked for half a day there was a big sigh, the diary came out and I was made to feel as though I was being totally unreasonable asking to take what was a rightful allowance - made her feel she had some power over me.

ETA I'm talking major national company too.

I would just like to explain a bit further - when I am working long hours (not 9 to 5) and not getting paid OT this is not a problem for me. However, in return I expect my employee to be flexible and this, I believe, is not unreasonable. Why should I book AL when all I am asking for is to be 1 or tops 2 hours late for work once in a blue moon? Pony only has trims and farrier is fine about doing this without me there so these issues only arise for the vet and touch wood this would be annual jabs and teeth. My AL is very precious to me due to having kids and horses - not that it is any less precious to people who have neither. What I am saying is that sometimes it is best to just keep stuum about the reasons behind this.

I get up at 5am every morning to exercise my daughter's pony, TO, feed, muck out etc. I then go back up after picking up kids from childminder to bring in etc. I always work my personal life around my work and actually really enjoy my work. BUT I do not have a particularly flexible boss.

Probably true, I'm just feeling that scientists get more than their fair share of rubbish atm. Biotech is better than academia though by a long way!

the only reason i bring the horses in to this, is because i get penilised for it as im "tired at work"

Goodwill works both ways!

If you are so tired that it is affecting the job you are paid to do, then I'm not surprised your team leader doesn't feel hugely sympathetic towards your shift preferences, tbh.

Even if work isn't your priority (and arguably rightly so), your employer should feel as if it is. Happy boss = better position for you to negotiate your shift patterns from :D

I wouldn't take time off for a vet unless it was a true emergency. And farrier certainly not unless again a bad situation. I'd arrange all for out of work hours and arrange with a suitable friend to sit in on farrier in return for one muckout or something if that was not possible

I'd arrange all for out of work hours too, that does mean that you need to know your working hours in advance though, which the OP doesn't

Just so you know I have never had a horsy day off, I have picked up others shifts if they are ill and done extra work over my own work and done plenty hours over time, every one has a problem with the hours, this is my point, every one gets a day they are exhausted regardless, and I always make sure I have flexi or annual leav available for horse related issues, the issue I have is I have to re arrange a lot to be able to work the day correctly call it OCD, and yes I am tired and I am disabled and deal with problems to my best ability but do not see it as an excuse, pain killers naturally make you drowsy.

My managers do not take in to consideration people make plans out side of work however if something comes up for them we have to take the brunt, I'm very much a you scratch my back ill scratch yours kinda person, and a days notice is not suitable for any one with children or horses or second jobs I don't expect to be given privileges I do expect notice it goes with saying, I love my job I would not ever want to leave apart from go higher in my department, and the hours are bloody lovley, just something's do need to give sometimes

Out of the length of time I've been there I've been tired once tothe point I had tears rolling down my face from yawning so much! Never lived it down. I know my boss is hard on me for a reason he thinks I should go for supervisor poistion of it were to come up, but sometimes would be nice not to always have having horses being thrown to me as a reason I can't be Off I'll with the flu or I yawn that's my point, I have a agreement with the YO which has now all been mucked up

Not everyone can get farrier or vet out of hours though. When I was on days, I'd a half day AL, 6 weeks in advance for my farrier visit. They only do Mon - Fri in my area. Likewise, I'd put in a request early for a vet visit (as I know when my jabs are due and if I speak to vet in advance, this is no problem).

OP - it sounds like you have a good opportunity regarding the supervisor position if it comes up. What you may also have to bear in mind, is that with that position you may need to be more flexible.
You've had some good advice on the thread regarding proactive action, all the best with your situation x
