Tear whilst foaling - now wind noise

I am looking to buy a new horse since retiring mine. I went to view and try a lovely mare today who is perfect in every way, But!! She is 7 and had a foal when she was 4/5. The current owner bought her from the breeder and was advised that during foaling, the mare sustained a tear. The tear was never stitched and healed itself apparently but is now very obviously still torn! The current owner has no issues with it and her vet has said it isn't causing her any medical issues and so it can be left as it is.

My problem is one, it's unsightly and two, she makes a terrible windy / sucking noise from that area. The owner has told me that her vet has said it can be stitched and there is approx 95% chance the noise will stop.

I intend to have the mare 5 stage vetted anyway and will discuss all of this with my own vet but wanted to hear if anyone else has experienced this noise following a tear during foaling.

I think the poor hour should have been treated at the tie or shortly after foaling but no idea why she wasn't. Also, I have no interest in breeding from her - she has lovely dressage bloodlines and dressage is all I will be doing with her.

Any experiences would be much appreciated. Thanks

Thanks - that's what I had to do!! It's way too complicated to work out if it could moved. It's now in the breeding section. Thanks a lot.

Yep, it's highly likely that the tear could be fairly easily fixed and that this would resolve the problems. In respect of it not having been repaired when it happened, the success rate is far higher if this type of foaling injuries are allowed to heal before stitching is attempted, so it's quite normal for them to be left (although not usually indefinitely).

If she is as good a horse as you say, this would not put me off.

ditto what GreedyGuts says.
my TB mare tore quite badly during foaling (in spite of Caslicks being opened well beforehand). the vets would not stitch it soon after, they left it to heal, and then months later sedated her, gave local anaesthetic, cut the edges so that they would adhere, and put in about 5 stitches. these were left to knit etc.
She still makes a tiny noise occasionally but it's nothing like it was... she had a huge tear too (almost up to anus).
it wouldn't put me off either if she's good in every other way. might be possible to negotiate a bit of a discount because of it though perhaps.

Thanks for that. Since coming home from seeing her I have been reading a lot re the issue and I see now how it wouldn't have been done at the time and it appears to be not too uncommon. The tear is external (as far as I'm aware) and my vet will hopefully tell me that there is no other issues with it and it can stiched up and the noise will stop! The current owner has said its not as bad when she's fitter but it has always been a constant noise. The good thing is she has had no problems with infection or irritation etc so she is unaffected by it which is the main thing.

Thanks again.

Oh thats good that it is external, I bought a mare that had an internal tear and she constantly had urinary infections as some of her poo came out of the wrong hole!

She had the op at Newmarket.

Good luck, sounds like yours is much more straightforward :)
