So further to the post below, I've now got to put two lots of gunk in my yearling's eye at least twice per day

My normal technique is a clean glove and trying to rub it in. Her eyeball is quite sore and she is not being terribly helpful. I think I am get more around her eyelids than in the eye.

Anyone got a good technique for getting cream in the top corner with an unhelpful patient??

Its in little tubes with the applicators, but she is jumping around too much, so there is a high chance of stabbing her in the eye and making things worse.

I always find it easier to try and lay the end of the applicator tube parallel against the eye or the lower lid to help with steadiness and then try and squeeze it out. this reduces the chance of poking her in the eye which can happen easily if you are aiming at right angles to the eye ball. Does that make any sense?

i do the same - and approach from the back of the eye rather than the centre of the head, if that makes more sense, pop it under the lower lid then massage in - distract with a little food or haynet and it gets easier

i tend to go in from the back of the eye too, but i lift the top lid a little , usually with my little finger and pop it under there, that way when they squeeze the eye shut it is spread over all the eyeball before getting washed into the lower lid.

feel for you doing this!!

I have drops for Barry's eye and tend to go for the corner of the eye where there is less chance of doing any damage if he does move - but then he is very good about it! Think drops are easier than cream - can you get the drugs as drops?(though they don't last as long in the eye, I suppose)
If you are really struggling can you ACP her?? (though twice a day seems a bit much

wasn't much help there - sorry!

good luck

Well 2ml of sedalin made b*gger all difference.

Cannot say I blame her, as very baby reaction a human putting two types of cream in the (already bruised) eye. I cannot pull away lower or upper lid, so settled for the glove and smearing on technique!.

Don't use the tube directly in the eye, you will contaminate it.
Squeeze suitable amount onto index finger, hold round nose with other hand. Pull bottom of eye down with thumb, and lid up with another finger - pop cream into corner.
Remember to wash hands between eyes.

I do the same as vicijp - sort of roll the ointment off the finger and down into the inside of the eye - using the lower lid as a means of 'scraping' the ointment off. It helps to position the ointment in the right place on the finger.

Using tubes, of any sort is always a bit risky on anything other than a very calm and still horse. With practice, the whole manoeuvre will become very 'slick and safe' !! Do keep in mind the risk of cross contamination though and wash hands.
