Does anyone have a magic technique for putting food stuffing into a Kong toy which doesn’t result in the filling getting all over the sink/under my fingernails/anywhere other than where it is supposed to be? I absolutely hate doing it 😳

Well that didn't go according to plan - I stuck George in the crate with his Kong as a practice session, thinking he'd have half the filling left for later when I go out for a run. Little horror has managed to stuff down half a can of Butchers Tripe in less than an hour :D :D

I'm not sure how he has managed to lose weight since being with me, he does nothing but eat! But he is looking better :)

Was it frozen? That slows them down usually.
Try mixing in some kibble with it.

Kong fillings just get demolished in no time here but as I didn't want to add too much food to a kong I tried smearing (nice word!) the insides with a thin layer of Bovril. You can even use that as a kind of glue to stick kibble to as well! It is messy but it does keep my pup and my old girl busy for a useful amount of time, it means I don't have to try to remember how much I put in the kong etc etc.

I find the Goughnuts K9 Kup is much easier to fill and last much longer. Its bigger and is the same width all the way down.

Must admit I’d never heard of those! But a quick google search tells me that at that price George will be sticking with his perfectly good Kong for now lol 😂

No help on filling as I make an awful mess (not helped by usually trying to fend off two greedy cats whilst stuffing them), but my dog has good tips for emptying (not that George seems to need them!). I think he is part crow, in that he waits til his has defrosted and then he picks them up, lifts them up really high and slams them down on the floor repeatedly until all the filling has flown out all over my floor and then eats it from there. I’m not sure this is how they are meant to be used!

Extra question, is it true I need to keep a hole all the way through whilst filling to prevent a vacuum effect on his tongue (if he licked them)? I haven’t done this but read it recently.

I've never left a hole through it but suppose it makes sense.

I blame CC for the fact that I’ve bought some raw tripe on my way to a job interview this morning just for stuffing kongs 😂 it’s minced so should be nice and easy..... 🙄

What if you made a clingfilm roll of the food (you know, in a slightly pretentious cheffy sort of way), partly froze it, then unwrapped it to stick it in to squish to shape, then froze it completely?
Not that it sounds like even more faff ;)

A small knife or spatula and a substance that isn't too runny, like cream cheese or cheap pate. Those sort of textures stick to the sides and take FOREVER for busy tongues to clean the inside completely

If I put anything remotely sticky in mines kong it seems to remain lodged at the narrow end and is a beggar to clean out afterwards so I gave up using them for food and just use as a throw toy.
I don't think they were intended to be used for daily rations, but as a way to prevent boredom? The getting stuck at the narrow end is what takes the effort and concentration by the dog to get the last traces out
