I will attempt to explain, but I don't know anything about teeth

New livery noticed last night that her horse's face was swollen (on the side, just back from mouth) and he was having trouble eating (though still managed). She has managed to get a better look at it today and it looks like the tush (sp?) tooth is either broken or rotten, it's at an angle and is razor sharp. It just so happens dentist and vet are coming tomorrow, she has asked the vet to come at the same time as the dentist now.

She doesn't think it can be saved and will have to come out but she is worried if it will affect the way his bit fits? We will know more tomorrow from the professionals but you know how us horse-owners like to worry

Any advice much appreciated

My old horse (25 year) had a tooth out about a year ago. The vet deals with my horses' teeth as they have to be sedated. He had spotted that this tooth was cracked when they were checked 6 months previously and this time decided it ought to be removed. I have had no problems with it although it was harder to get out than the vet thought! He took it away to add to his souvenir collection. She was ridden in a straight bar Happy Mouth at the time and had about 1 week off I think.

it won't affect the way the bit sits, the bit should be much higher than the tushes anyway, in the corner of the mouth. there's a decent gap before the tush.
sounds as if it'll have to come out. maybe he got stuck in something - one of my old lads managed to get his teeth stuck through the let-down part of an anti-weaving grill, and farrier had to remove his tush with a hammer and chisel before he broke his neck struggling... apart from panic attack at the time, it never caused him another problem.

Thanks for replies

We guessed it shouldn't affect it but you know how you get these ideas in your head lol.

Dentist & vet should be there now.

Kerilli, we've got no idea how he did it but the episode with your old boy sounds awful, thank god the farrier was there!

For anyone who's interested

horse did have to have his tooth out. Dentist thinks he probably knocked it within the last couple of weeks, no idea how.

Wound has got to be cleaned twice a day - Vet coming back to check him on Friday and should be okay to put bit in etc in about 10-14 days if all healed well.
