Equine dentist - It's ok if you get a vet that is very good at teeth, but you have no way of knowing if they are or not, really. EDT's are trained specifically to do teeth, vets only spend a very small amount of time studying dental aspects.

Dentists do teeth, Doctors do operations etc, so why be different with horses.......providing the dental technician is properly qualified I'd use them every time.

i had the vet out a couple of weeks ago 2 do my horses teeth - she spent about 10 mins and said they were great (last year said my gelding had bad teeth that will take several sessions to sort out - he had never been done b4 we had him) i was not convinsed at all, so have got a recommened dentist coming 2 day

I have my vet do it mainly because the mare needs sedating. However my vet has been trained and seems to spend as long and do a similiar job to the dentists.

Up until this year, I ALWAYS used the dentist. He had recommended that my boy was done every six months. Which I had done.

Had the vet coming for a few other bits, MOT etc......and my popped on the gag and let me have a feel round Benj's mouth.....bit scarey. But the edges and growth on his teeth did not warrant them being done every 6 months.

My dentist had some HIGHLY recommended from vets and other horse owners.

So, I have changed my mind slightly about who I use to get his teeth done!!

dentist, always, but a qualified one who takes about 40mins per horse, actually sweats doing it (they should, it's hard work, and if they're doing it right, they'll sweat!), and who lets you feel that all the teeth are completely rounded and smooth (with the gag on!) at the end.
vets don't do as good a job. i think they resent the boringness of it, when they've got a head full of more complicated things that they know about!

Definitely an EDT. At my old yard one lady's horse reared and went over backwards. Vet came out to check her over and rasped a couple of teeth. The horse then reared again the following week so owner had back checked, saddle changed etc and she was still obviously not happy in her work. The EDT came out for the rest of the yard and checked her at the same time - he did a lot of work on her and said it had been the teeth causing the problem all along. Horse was back to her normal self very quickly after this. I always prefered having teeth done by the EDT but this incident increased my caution about having a vet do their teeth as they just do not appear to do as thorough a job.

In my opinion, I would say it depends on the individual vet or destist - you can get good and bad of both. The vet does ours (horses that is!!!) as they all need sedating, and she can spend up to and hour and a half sometimes, and is meticulous with it. I trust her implicitly. It would be a bit tricky trying to co-ordinate the vet coming out to sedate, then the dentist coming to rasp, as our vet sometimes doesn't know exactly when she'll be with us depending on her previous visits that day.
