Teeth - Vet or Dentist - And Why?

Dentist, because i used to use my vet (who walks on water as far as i'm concerned in every other way) and then had a dentist check their teeth 2 weeks after vet had done them, he put the gag on, had a feel, had a laugh, invited me to stick my hand in and feel... and they were so sharp that i cut my finger...
will never have a vet do teeth again. i don't go to my doctor to have my teeth done, after all.
 
Vets only get basic training in doing teeth. Dentists train for much longer just to do the teeth.
 
Previously always got a dentist out but now my vet is also a certified dentist so I get him to do it. And he's great!!

I always take lardy to Bell to have his teeth done, made the mistake of having a job lot dentist at the yard

Ralph was one of the last and I think the dentist was tired and fed up by the end of doing >10 horses

Ralph got the raf of the rasp and I found myself flying through the air holding onto the gad, he wont let anyone near his teeth now, so I have to have him sedated and put in stocks

I would not have the dentist agian.

I see it like going to the hairdressers.....go in the morning and you get a fantastic hair cut, go at the end of the day and you come out with a bag on your head

Dentist, I used to use the vet until an EDT came out and showed me how it's really done. I love my vet(s) but they're not trained like an EDT, so I am happy enough to get vet out for vet things and dentist out for teeth things

dentist every time, i was going to have the vet do them once and they want to use the electric rasper on 30 plus year old horse which would of knocked all his teeth out for sure
 
Found Sally Kingsley (EDT)
she is so good at sorting their mouths out,wouldn't let anyone else near them.
 
Having used several EDTs, we now use the vets. I don't know whether we just had bad experiences with dentists, but one was very rough with our mare because she was a little headshy and another did very drastic work with a dremel drill on our TB, which made him very sore and, IMO, filed off a LOT of tooth enamel, which the next dentist said was excessive and unecessary.

That's not to say that all EDTs are bad, and they are more fully trained in dentistry than we vets are, it's just that our experiences have led us back to the vets.

Incidentally, isn't Sally Kingsley dual trained as well?

... used to have the EDT but when I knew I had to try and coordinate the Vet and the EDT due to sedation to be carried out decided it was the Vet for me .... she used all the power tools that the EDT would use anyway

I have to have the vet as he needs to be sedated and would cost me the earth for both,lol!!However our vets are very good!!

Not quite true about Vets only getting the basic training on dentestry, they have to do continued professional training throughout their practicing life. My husband is a Vet and has all the same equipment as the EDT but because he can triple the money he earns in surgery compared with what he earns doing teeth he won't do them unless he really has to!! I even have an EDT to do my horses teeth because I get too many huff's & puff's if I ask!!

We have been called out to the odd horse that has been butchered by a Dentist so make sure they are on the EDT listing and have a good reputation. They are not legally allowed to sedate a horse either so if you know your horse has to be sedated then remember to add the cost of your Vet call out & sedate to the EDT's bill which is usually around £50
 
I use the vets for a basic checks, and the vets themsevles refer any problems to their dentist, works very well.
