My horse fractured 211 which was discovered on a routine dental examination.

He was referred to the weiper's centre and it was found the pulp cavity and nerve had disappeared and the tooth was in 3 parts on x-ray.

The only way the tooth could be removed was the hard way, through the bone under his eye. A trap door was made in the bone and the tooth knocked out!

This was 2 weeks ago and he is finding haylage challenging still.

I feel terrible that I didnt notice it, but my horse didnt show any signs and he must have been in terrible pain.

Just to say really, have regular dental check ups for your horse.

Thanks, but still feel I should have notice something, he was even happy to have a bit in. He didnt show any signs at all. What a brave horse.

Dont beat yourself up. I bought a mare last year for my sister, she was supposedly 16, got her teeth done after a couple of months, and the horse dentist, (We call him the tooth fairy), reckoned she was 23. He had to remove 2 of her back teeth, and he thought in all her years, she had never had her teeth done. The scarring on the inside of her mouth was shocking, her teeth were razor sharp. She had been "packing" her food against it to try to stop the pain. He actually vomited twice while pulling her teeth, the smell was so bad. I felt so sorry the poor mare, but she really thrived afterwards. I felt really bad too, but like that, no problems with the bit, or any give away signs. She's nearly 25 now, and nobody believes me, as she looks so well. (But she did look her age 18 mths ago).

At least it's done now, and he'll be much better.
