It was suggested to me that my 4 year old is teething and this is why he has recently been sensitive to any contact when being ridden.

Just wondered how true this is and others' experiences of it?

Yep it's true, they will still be loosing and getting new teeth until they are 6.

My mare is a bit more mouthy when her teeth are coming through, so she has a few days off, food watered down so a little softer, couple days later she is back to normal again.

Thanks for your reply. So in a couple of days he should be back to normal?
Was really resisting any contact on Saturday when ridden, to the point where he reared when asked to stand. This is first time behaviour I've experienced with him so thought there may be an under lying reason. He is an extra sensitive horse too!

when did he last see a dentist? both of the 4 year olds on our yard needed to have their wolf teeth sorted out and were both mouthy before having their standard dental check.

He last saw the dentist in February. Do you think he will need him out again already?

Has he had his wolf teeth out? They may be aggravating him if not.
My EDT recommends an examination every 6 months for youngsters whislt their teeth are still soft etc.

^^^ agree, Shy has his teeth done every six months, and I switched to a rubber bit too - but he's just eaten thru that today. His teeth became really sharp between 3 and a half to four, and he was sedated to get them sorted. He also has tushes coming through, ouch !!

I've tried him bitless yesterday (never, ever again ), so I'm trying to decide where to go from here.

If you have had the dentist in Feb then i wouldn't worry about having him again for six months, they will have periods of having senstive mouths as they will still be coming through.
Wolf teeth don't always need to be taken out, Bug has hers still and the dentist has noted that they are in a good postition and will not affect her.

I really wouldn't be too concerned, leave him a few days and then have another go on him, you will find he is back to normal.

Remember if it carrys on then it may be something else like his back or the facy he is 4 and having a trying it on session, but from what you have said i'd be pretty surprised if it was anything other than his teeth.

My boy was a really pansy with his teeth. We had one that took ages to come through (finally through now though). As well as above (soft food, rubber bit etc) I used to put baby bonjela on them, and he was much better when I did. They do a teething one. That meant i could keep him ticking over work wise, but just didn't put any pressure on his mouth, so hacking etc. Worth a shot.
