Looking for some ideas here..... Cam as some of you may know is grey and like a fairly typical teenager (he's 6) he loves sleeping flat out in his bed, a lot of the time! I recently changed from wood pellets to Rapport (rape seed) bedding. The reason for this is he spends so much of his time kipping, that even with rubber matting he needs a thick deep bed to stop him getting scabby hocks and elbows. I was finding that the wood pellets needed to be so deep that they were becoming dusty. Anyway, the new bedding is lovely, and if possible, I think he spends even more time stretched out on it. But..... he's getting absolutely filthy. He's actually quite organised in his bed and does all his droppings along the edges, then uses them as a pillow. :(

I've found that the Rapport is very good at absorbing the wet but not the moisture from the droppings. So, I would really appreciate some ideas. Does anyone have a waterproof summer sheet or similar? When the weather is a little cooler I can leave him in in his no fill turnout the night before I have to take him somewhere, but that's way too hot for this time of year.

Secondly, does anyone else have a problem with flies focussing on a certain spot? No wound or anything but they congregate in a 5 cm strip where his neck joins his chest if that makes sense. They just attach and basically feed on him. Rather unpleasant really. :(

Could you coat all bar the saddle area with 7-day Mud Away stuff? It's essentially silicon, and stops stuff sticking to them...

I thought that might be an idea, but I asked Suziq77 about it (she came to stay!), but she said that while it works on her bay, it wouldn't work on a grey because being oil based it brings all the brown yuck to the surface. It's annoying, I love the new bed, but he's becoming yellow. :(

Mane and tail spray? One of they greys I ride has it all over his legs and it stops him from staining so no reason you couldn't put it over more of him.

Mix the new bedding with dry wood pellets, helps absorb the wet. I use shavings and pellet mix, I mix the pellets only where that horse tends to wet and get a nice neat clump out once a week.

I am quite loving my amigo Aussie allrounder fly rug. I got it for sun protection as she burns but as a lovely side effect it is keeping her white bits white:eek: I don't use the neck part except for the night before a show. Its water resistant too so if she lies in something minging it doesn't soak through. Never been hot with it on either. Definitely brilliant for pale horses outside if that helps!

Thanks everyone - I tried the mane and tail conditioner but that didn't really help. And transitioning the bed over with a mix of wood pellets and rapport was not something I want to repeat - made for a very heavy grungy bed. But fionWinnie's rug suggestion looks great, so will look into that. I'm not worried about rugging all the time, but when I have an early start it's quite nice to know that the horse I put to bed clean could be vaguely clean in the morning! :)

Tam gets that. He has an elongated whorl so there is a line of skin where the flies get easy access. Anywhere he has a whorl or the hair changes direction is a target actually, so midline of belly and just under his star are also attacked :( Summer fly cream does the trick although would stain Cam flourescent yellow

I've never seen it before, it only seems to be in that particular place for him but last night he came in with 3 rows in the same area and they are swollen. :(

For the flies I put a thick layer of sudocrem on the area. It stops them picking away at it.

Sudocream it is then, always have some around, and it won't stain him a funny colour. Thanks. :)

I'm another Aussie Allrounder supporter! Got mine a few weeks ago and love it! Got it to keeps flies off his back and protect from the sun. He lives out and even in this nearly 30 degree heat (in Scotland as well!) he's not been too hot, his coat is lovely and shiney and protected and it has kept the flies off great with no bites. I even have the neck up as the flies seem to go for him there and he's never too hot when I check. It's such a great all round rug!

Thanks! I've ordered one. :)

:p Looks perfect, although I would probably need several gallons of the stuff. ;):)
