Zara Phillips and Toytown, the world eventing champions, are likely to use the Mitsubishi Badminton Three Day Event on May 3-6, to qualify for next year's Olympic Games.

Although Britain has qualified to have a team in Hong Kong, by finishing second in last year's World Championships in Aachen, individuals have to do so, and one good placing at Badminton would do it.

Yogi Breisner, the performance manager of the British eventing team said yesterday: "The qualifying period runs from Jan 1 this year to June 30 in 2008, but we want to get the top riders and horses qualified as early as possible and the majority of them will go to Badminton."

Last year Phillips and Toytown went to Aachen with only two runs in one-day events behind them, and it would be possible for them to do the same again this year and then try to qualify when defending their European title at this year's championships in Italy in September.

But, said Breisner, at yesterday's annual meeting of British Eventing in Coventry: "If we decided to let Zara and Toytown, or any of the others, wait until the Europeans, and then for some reason they could not go there, they would be chasing around trying to qualify. If we get them qualified early that will give us greater flexibility."

Phillips had already intimated that she is keen to ride Badminton, never having done so. Their second place at Burghley in 2003, which earned them a spot on the Athens Olympics shortlist before Toytown's injury ruled them out, and their subsequent European and World Championships achievements have proved them well up to the task.

Breisner, determined to add a team gold to their silver medals in Sydney and Athens under his management, is planning an exhaustive trip to the pre-Olympic event in Hong Kong in August.

He said: "And if we've done the job right in 2008, then we can concentrate on 2012." He has started planning for the London Olympics, including having already compiled a list of about 130 possible horses.

Thoughts on this? Any ideas on which horses Yogi's put on the list?

Interesting reading, thanks for that.

Well obviously Snoopy is on the list

Umm, in all honesty I havent a clue really, hard to predict who will be there as many of those horses can range from 6-10 old.
One or two of Williams new rides could be there. Would be worth watching some of the 6 year old BYEH/PAVO classes and watch the horses competing at 1 and 2 star events.

I would think the likes of Irish Jester is on it! He would be on mine! Say the oldest they would take would ideally be 16, that horse could be 11 this year. There could be a lot of good 2*/3* horses out there that he's got his eye on. At the other end of the scale 9 or 10 is probably the absolute youngest they would want, so they would be 4 and 5 this year. William and Squeaky have timed it well - or their mummies did! Deco's baby is planning for 2016 and 2020 (I'll be 37 in 2020 - that's SCARY!).

On my list would be the following:
Lead the Way - Clea Phillips (Won Blair 3*)
Kings Gem - Mary King (7th Le Lion 2*)
Cesari/Carousel Quest - Clariss Clague Reading
Westwood Joker - Polly Stockton
LB/Magenta - Selina Elliott

Actually there are so many I have just realised so will not continue any further!

this is just a rehash of yogi's speech at the BE convention. i believe the horses he is talking about on the equine pathway are nothing you will particularly have heard of yet as most of them are only 6/7. irish jester would be on there thoughand i can think of a couple others but he also said there would be de-selection so as far as i am concerned it is only interesting if we could see current list to see how many they get right! Dont expect it will be that many!!

Yes this is a basic summary of what yogi said at the BE convention. His speech gave a fair bit of insight into the equine pathway and also the hong kong test event. If I remember right he said their aim was to get as many horses as possible qualified for the 2008 olympics early this year to give them greater flexibility next year.
