tell me about arabs/youngsters?

Oh this lovely thread! I'm currently off riding for the forseeable year or so, but my half bred mare is advancing in years so am inevitably looking at bringing in a successor. I've temporarily been swayed by my mums new conniextb, but looking at these pic reminds me of why I love arabs and the amazing beings they are.

My mare is a grumpy old cowbag at times but she is also very sweet, so easy to handle and the best hacking partner.

But don't talk to me about saddles for arabs...grrr! She is between an xw and xxw, I know that, but the fitter I used insisted she was just a wide. They are so deceptive! Now have a 16.5 wintec 500 dressage with the widest gullet on her but I have been through so many saddles this year it is unreal! At least I know now for next time...

Sorry op, buy it before I do!

I have Pure Breds, Part Breds and Anglos. Quite frankly, I wouldn't have anything else. They are intelligent, versatile and agile with the ability to turn a hoof to anything. Here are some of mine, stallions, geldings and mares, champions in the show ring, winners in BS and generally lovely to be around.

I have a purebred and a partbred.

Dennis, 16hh 3/4 Egyptian 1/2 Crabbet/Spanish gelding. He was the easiest horse in the world to back. He has an amazing temperament, super friendly and wants to be everyone's friend. He takes an XXWide saddle and a 52 inch girth.

As a foal

Pintoarabian your Picasso kossack is pulling the same pose as my lad in the photo on my profile page! they look quite similar too. With a name like that he has to be Russian at least in part... If so maybe it's a Russian pose as my lad's sire is Russian :D

He is straight Russian, Sadken. Sire is Kubinec, former World Champion and dam is Popova, double European Nations' Cup Champion. He carries the sabino gene and has a huge white belly splash that makes him very distinctive.

I have 2 Crabbets. Never believe what others say about arabs, they are what you make them. Don't keep them stimulated, then they will stimulate themselves. The examples people see of mad behaviour is of peoples making, it is not inherent in the breed. Yes they are bright, but then that's why I have no interest in horses that aren't, they just don't float my boat. They adore people (being bred for centuries to live with them) & thrive on interaction & work. My mare jumps (pro event groom wanted to take her affiliated eventing but I was too busy with her in endurance), goes through water (had to take her through high-chest high bareback when her field suddenly flooded, too deep to lead her), & is exceptionally brave, like the pba I had before her. If I had to go through fire, I'd want to be mounted on one of my arabs (also own an ISH), heart of a lion. They have the most amazing work ethic & always give of their best.

If you're anywhere near Addington Manor late July 2013 there is an international Crabbet convention with about 100 Crabbet arabians parading & demonstrating various spheres of work (hopefully my girls have been selected). Whilst you may not have/want a Crabbet, there will be a huge pool of arab knowledge in one place. If you want information, would be a good place to go & ask about.

I use a Podium saddle, fits brilliantly done so many miles in it.

Hippona, your gelding is BEAUTIFUL!

Loving seeing everyone's photos. My own arab is really poorly at the moment, liver damage, and it's breaking my heart. I've owned him for 14 years, we've done 100's of miles together and had all sorts of adventures, he's so intelligent and such a character, and we are so bonded. An instructor once said to me ' you were born to ride that horse, and he was born for you to ride him', I think it's true.

Thank you FF, all good vibes are much appreciated. Difficult days.

In answer to the OP's original post, owning an arab is is like owning any other horse but with added dimensions. There is their beauty, the way they move with such power, smoothness and grace and how that feels so absolutely right when you ride them. Then there's the responsiveness and intelligence, how quickly they learn what you are asking of them until it becomes an almost psychic bond. They can be dreadful snobs, well mine is anyway, he thinks coloured horses, shetlands and donkeys are all complete peasants and not worth a second look, but arabs are ROYAL after all! They make up for it by having a terrific sense of humour, always up for doing something new and being smarter than your average bear. I love mine, can you tell??

Update for those that have posted: unfortunately buying the filly fell through, I've found no yard that'll take on a youngster or if they do they have no vacancies. :( thanks for all the people who showed me your Arabs they are all gorgeous.
