I am puppy pining. We lost both our elderly Spitzes within a month of each other this spring and a two dog household just feels empty! We need to go back up in doggie numbers asap!

We have a wonderful GSD and I'll always want a GSD in the family but two large dogs is a bit impractical, for starters we would need a new car which is out of the question!

We also have a JRT who is also brilliant but two terriers may encourage each other in all that is terrier-y which is not a good idea.

So I'd like a medium sized dog, with a lively outlook and very friendly temperament. I've been reading up a bit on Australian Shepherds. Do they share the GSD loyalty and trainability without having too much of the collie loopiness? Does anyone know anything about their breeding lines? I get the impression that some temperament traits are associated with some colours, is that correct? Which lines/colours/breeders to look at for a family friendly dog?

Do you have any other ideas for medium sized dogs to consider? I'd quite fancy a poodle, but OH is not very keen. Spaniels are a wee bit too loopy for me, but I am interested in setters as well. Goldies and labs are great dogs but for some reason they don't excite me.

The only thing I know about them is that they are not Australian! How about a real Australian an Australian Cattle Dog!

Lovely dogs, but I am not sure they are best suited with a young family (I am sure many individual examples will prove me wrong, but I don't think the breed as a whole is the best fit).
