Does anyone have a Fell or has had one in the past? What are they like?

I know you can't generalise but I guess there are certain breed traits and quirks.

Used to have a few of them but my legs grew too long. Max height 14hh, really lovely ponies, very versatile, always try and please when you ask them to do something.

Not sure about quirks, I was always lucky and they were all very sweet, and very quick to learn. Keep an eye out for sarcoids if you are thinking of buying one there are a handful of bloodlines that seem to carry more than others.

Mine is a Fell X and he's fab!
He is incredibly clever, which is a blessing and a curse! He can come up with endless evasions if he doesn't feel like doing something, but equally if he puts his mind to things he can do them brilliantly.
He is the gentlest, friendliest, sweetest pony. He can be trusted with the tiniest of children and gives pony rides to anyone and everyone. He just adjusts to whoever is on him. He escorts nervous riders/baby horses out on hacks, round the fields, gives leads over jumps, stands stock still if other horses have a silly etc. He is strong and hardy, has good feet, big thick winter coat, long mane and tail and a cheeky character!

We have done showing, dressage, jumping, sponsored rides, played gymkhana games...he will give anything a go, nothing phases him.

Basically, mine is just brilliant and if all fells are like him then everyone should have one

My OH's Mum has one. He's called Dalefoot Sinbad. He's a lovely little pony and they've done very well with him showing. He can be stubborn and strong at times though. He's great to hack and LOVES to jump though! A lovely lovely allrounder! They bought him just over a year ago when he was 5 and he'd only ever been ridden at one speed - fast! So they've had to slow everything right down with him and take him back to the beginning, but he's beginning to show some lovely work now. I love him!

Meet Sinbad...

ive never had one my self (would love one) but i have ridden a few, they are fab ponies, they can be a bit opinionated but are definately willing to please
heltondale lines seem to be more opinionated than others in my experience

My sister has a fell, an Inglegarth pony, she bought her from the sales as a 4 yo who had aparantly done a bit but we took her back to basics, she is now 14 and has just had her first foal a lovely filly by Carrock I'm Yer Man, Bracklin lines are fantastic, thats the stud that have the stallion.
SHe is quirky, and opinionated but very intelligent and would do absolutely anything for my sister and she is a brilliant mum. She has shown at the Royal highland show, hacks, jumps a bit, neither of us do, unfortunately.
I would love another fell, she's just such a fantastic character.

Your pony sounds totally dreadful,i dont know how you put up with him so being the kind hearted person I am I will take him off your hands for you

Seriously he sounds fab and I wish I had one just like him

I love fells. Used to groom for a friend who showed them on the county circuit. We had a heltondale and a wolds. The heltondale mare was a bit bonkers - like many fells she born wild but managed to retain every instinct and neurosis - very nervous but took so much confidence from her rider. The wolds gelding was dappled brown and totally beautiful. Both were awesome to ride, like little powerhouse tanks, totally turbo charged! Both used to do M&M working hunter classes. They are my pony of choice when I have enough money to get my own (hopefully within the next 2-3 years) and I'm 5'8"! My favourite breed by a mile - completely beautiful and generally just ace!

Thanks all, I am *fingers crossed* picking up a Fell gelding this weekend.

He is a two year old, was bought straight from the fells as a weanling and I fell totally in love with him when I went to see him last week.

I can't wait to get him home

I'm very jealous, we need to see photos when he gets home! Im thinking of getting a day off work to go to Penrith in October for the fell pony show and sales - will have to be restrained though or my mum will end up with one in the garden! Good luck with your new boy.

Mine is a Drybarrows, he's 25 now and retired but had some great fun, sponsored rides always had to be in the front very competitive boy, he loved showing, jumping, riding holidays great allrounder but cheeky so kept me thinking, lives out very cheap to feed and loves being groomed.

My old Fell Pony was the best pony I've had. We bought her when she was 18 months old - untouched just halter broken and had literally just been weaned as her mum had been dropped off before she was brought to us. We sadly lost her a few years ago and I miss her so much as she was just as much a friend as a ride.

My mum bought a Fell as she had lost confidence with a Welsh Cob x Arab rig!

Gypsy(Wolds Feral) was perfect in every way and would do anything for you. If you accidentally put your fingers in her mouth she would drop whatever she was eating before she bit you, I only ever fell off once(in 15 years) and that was my fault, she jumped over 5ft, was faster than the little ponies at speed jumping and gymkhana and would spook at nothing.

The only problem was that she was opinionated and like the sound of her feet on wood(stable door, horsebox ramp etc etc)

I would highly recommend a Fell pony to anyone. I would also recommend you join another forum, especially for Fell ponies:
