Tell me about grass mats

What's been your experience? Is it too late to put them down now? Do they move about? My gateways are 2 to 4 inches of soup deep (but hard underneath - no clay soil)..... I have 2 barefoot heavies.

I've got some mats by my gates and they've worked really well until this week. The soupy mud has just washed onto them and its almost as bad as the area next to it but is slightly easier to walk on. In normal mud they've been great especially once the grass grew through. I did lay them before it was muddy, I imagine they wouldn't sit well on very wet mud.
