hi all :)

after a bit of a scare the other week with my mare i'm determined to do all i can to help her legs (they are lumpy bumpy things - came to me like that)

i currently have aerborn gel cooling boots but i must admit they only seem to stay cool for about 10mins max then i have to take them off as they seem to start to warm up quite alarmingly!!

so i've had a look through these pages and the new leg cooler gels that allow for evaporation are mentioned - are these better than the cooling boots? would i use it instead of? or after the boots?

Thank you :D

Not quite what you are asking but I really rate Gerry's magnetic boots. He wears them for half an hour before exercise and then overnight after exercise and he no longer has any windgalls despite the ridiculously hard ground at the moment so they must be helping.

I use ice tight the legs and bandage over and then sometimes use ice cool gel after. If the ground is hard at home I use ice cool gel after every hack

thanks for replies guys - interestong about the magnetic boots - she has awful windgalls and splints (really should not be sound lol - came to me like that though ;)) so i wonder if they'd still help old ones....

Sorry to hijack a bit p_h... but Wellsat - would you mind telling me which magnetic boots you use? My guy is rather windgally since earlier this season and anything I can do to reduce them would be wonderful!

P_h to add to the mix I have been usings Naff's version of Ice Tight Clay (can't remember the actual name!), but heard recently that gels are supposed to be much more effective as clays can actually keep the heat in!?!!

If you are doing affiliated make sure the gels are FEI legal as many are not and you will fail a drugs test.

Gels do not actively cool the tendons. You are better using ice and water as this will actively cool the tendons. This is why cool boots work so well. They are an easy way of doing this.

Clay - no person in their right mind would continue using it as its a insulator let alone bandaging on top!! Do you ever see top athletes getting into clay baths? No they get into ice water baths. Now if clay was that effective do you not think top athletes would use it? Race horses have used it in the past but the argument is that the washing off that clay afterwards cools the legs more not the clay.

On the magnetic boots theme, my horse has bad windgalls, has been off with a suspensory injury/arthritis last year - I use Premier Equine magnetic boots on his hinds, they seem very good at removing any puffiness. I don't use them in warm weather though, because they do make their legs hot. I rate magnetic boots more than glucosamine supplements TBH, but use both.:):)

cheers my dears = so you def think it works?

Oh yes!!! Really hels after the rideouts Ive done this forever after them with kia and hes 20 with no windgalls or splints in sight :D

I looked at the magnetic boots but never really put much stock in them, would be prepared to change my mind if I ever saw a clear cut case that it was them and not other things that helped :)
