A second dog is still a long way off for us - we're trying to move to a more suitable house this summer and I've apparently been banned from having one until I've graduated summer 2012, when we'll have more time and money to devote to another (and I can ask for a pup as a graduation present ;)).

...but anyway, today the MIL put a spanner in the works by saying that she wouldn't dog-sit for us if we got a GSD. She was bitten by a family GSD as a small child (it was later put down for biting the postman) and is apparently terrified of them. :(

She looks after Dax about one night a month for us and if any emergencies come up where she'd otherwise have to be left all day, so it's not inconsequential really and it would cost us a fortune to pay someone to do the same so, annoying as it is, her choices have to be taken into account.

OH has just walked in and declared he wants a shiba inu instead. I have no idea where this idea has come from, and my initial reading is leading me to believe we might as well have another bloody sibe as they're just as bad off the lead, but I'm willing to humour him for a bit - tell me what they're like to live with! I have at least 12 months to plan this next dog so I want to get it right, lots of options to think about, including whether to just go ahead and have another sibe from SHWA...

I was hoping she'd pop on here but if not I shall bother her on Facebook. :)

I know, it's very frustrating but we do somewhat rely on her for the odd night out. She does have her weird 'complexes', you just have to smile and nod and let her get on with it... :o

Thankfully it sounds like our friends are going ahead with their pup and you never know, we might be able to introduce her to a wriggly fluffy GSD pup that way and gently bring her round. She was quite adamant though. :( Fair enough though, it is her house and she already does us a huge favour.

See, my reasoning is that if they are like sibes we might as well just have another bloody sibe. :p

I have half come to the conclusion that when we are actively looking for the next dog, if a sibe came up in rescue (say, if Cayla got one in, or one came up on here by word of mouth) I couldn't not take it because I know the chances of a teenage sibe getting a proper home for life are very slim and we are, after all, sibe-savvy by now.

OH is adamant that he wants the second dog to be smaller, I am adamant that I just need a bigger car!

Tell him a sibe and a shiba would look silly pulling a rig together :D

Hiya BC :D

Shibas.......well, not a dog for the faint hearted :P (which i know you are not lol ), not a dog which can be let off a lead, they will hunt and kill if they get the chance, aloof with strangers, very sharp (an akita in a smaller package is the best description)

Hope this helps :D

With the exception of the aloofness they sound like little ginger sibes. :D

Giggling away at a Youtube vid of one chasing a Roomba...

Thanks all, more food for thought, seems I am stuck with the spitzes for life now!

A friend has one and he is a gorgeous dog. Very friendly and playful. Never seen him off a lead though! I only know him to say 'hello' to but he does seem lovely :)
