Tell me about Shih Tzus

I have a cross, mother was a Turkish Shih tzu and the father was supposed to be a Maltese terrier but he looks very much jack Russel x Shih tzu.
He's cool! He's a little bit of a pain at times as he's quite needy but the lady who bred them slept with the puppies and fed them rice pudding! I was off to a bad start ;) he thought he was a real baby!
He's 9 now and has a lovely very sweet temperament and is loyal.
On the downside he's been hard to train and moults badly. (Although I think this is the JR side not the shih tzu)
I'd have another, he's my little dude with attitude ;)

'tag nut hounds' :D:D:D

like all dogs depends largely on if they are treated like a dog or a child, they can be a bit yappy and the ones I have known have been quite high energy and I would not describe them as a lap dog

Hi, I have 2 shih tzus and having previously had bullmastiffs I was a little sceptical when mum brought a tiny poppy puppy home. But they are brilliant, our 2 have very different characters, pops is very intelligent and is more of a lap dog whereas Charlie is very energetic and ruled by his stomach. Both are extremely loyal and easy to train. Ours are not yappy or biters but they've been brought up as dogs not babies because we were used to having large dogs. We were told to get ones that are slightly smaller with longer noses as they get minimal health problems bar the odd ear infections :) good luck and make sure to supply lots of fluffy puppy pictures :)

My sister has one. He's approximately two years old. Completely laid back dog. Obedient & calm. Spends hours playing with the cat. I love him!!

My friend has one. She's a little cautious about strangers and will chose who she wishes to be friends with but never noticed any nastiness from her. Lively happy little soul.

My sister has got two and my niece one. One of my sister's is a bit yappy although she admits that's her fault. All three are very loving, enjoy company, walks and cuddles. Basically they are adorable lap dogs :)

Can you please tell me about the Shih Tzu breed - good or bad experiences as I am possibly looking into getting one.

I would completely recommend shih tzus to anyone. I have a 9 month old puppy.
She has proved highly trainable, obedient, lots of fun and very very friendly. She loves everyone and is not snappy or yappy. Loves to play and learn and I've decided I'm going to start doing agility with her.
They are primarily companion dogs, and are great little bundles of joy! She loves having cuddles. Mine has shown no anxiety issues and is generally a pleasure to have.
You do have to treat them like 'dog' though. Many treat them like a baby or child and that is when you can end up with a spoilt badly behaved dog. Mine wouldn't dream of biting.
they do require a lot of grooming, I brush mine 3-4 times a week at present but the amount depends on if they grow a long coat or you have it cut short.
They are prone to ear infections and skin problems, and you have to watch for over heating in the summer. I love them!

We grew up with labs, but she is my first 'personal' dog! I didn't want a large dog which needs lots of exercise, my shih tzu likes walks but is as equally as happy with a bomb around the garden or to just sleep all day! She really is a delightful fluff-ball and I will be getting another at some point :)

I think they're nice, I've got a Yorkie so I am a fan of little dogs in general. However, my neighbour has got one and she must have been seriously overbred, she's got the flattest face I have ever seen in a Shih-Tzu. I know their faces are on the 'squashy' side anyway but this little one's face is seriously weird, every time I bump into her and give a stroke I always take a sharp intake of breath, it's quite scary really.
