Thinking of getting a springer spaniel. Had one years ago but I am well out of touch with the breed now. Could you please tell me pros and cons of breed and your experience of them. For instance are they neurotic, are they loyal, do they need tons of exercise etc.? Where can I find a good working, sensible line

we have a 12 year old bitch, she was purchased from a pheasant farm from working parents. She is completely a-typical of a springer and is the quietest dog we have had. Loyal, loving, gentle, good with all animals but does have selective hearing! lol

we got our girl about 2 years ago - having never had springers or a pup it was a bit of a learning curve for me - having said that she has enriched our lives completely - the teenage months were a tad interesting but we have worked through those issues and now we have a reasonably well rounded dog - if i was to do it again ...... i would get a bitch not a dog and i would work on recall sooner apart from that i would have another in a heart beat - hope this helps OP

ooh i love springers my boy is 1yr 3 months :) he is so loyal, defiantly my dog but loves everyone and everything! Currently going through his baby-todddler/teenage transition. Having a spaniel puppy is tiring but def worth it! When matured they need a decent amount of exercise and once my boy has had his walk he will just chill out and sleep, so ignore the people saying springers are mental because with the right the exercise they arent and i couldnt wish for a better dog! my dog perfectly named Scamp has such a personality and i wouldnt be without him truly the best companion!

My lot are very loving, want to be on someone's knee when at home. They get excited for their walks, have benefited from some gundog training just to focus them. Evenings are calm and they are all upside down asleep.

As with any dog, socialise and train lots, be utterly consistent. Choose from a litter if possible: do you want the lively or the calm one? I chose the calm one, the OH chose a lively one and he's been a bit of a trauma, but is the most gorgeous boy-3rd pic, his brother is leaning on big dog in the 2nd pic.

For instance are they neurotic.............
YES, IF NOT EXERCISED AND MENTALLY STIMULATED ENOUGH....WORKERS MORE THAN SHOW LINES, BUT APPLIES TO ANY DOG REALLY.

are they loyal...........
YES, IF TREATED (AS ANY DOG) WITH COMPASSION AND RESPECT AND YOU BUILD A BOND BY WORKING TOGETHER......BE THAT GUNDOG WORK, AGILITY OR WHATEVER.

do they need tons of exercise etc.?
DEFINE TONS OF EXERCISE! WHAT TO ME MAY BE A WALK IN THE PARK, MAY TO YOU BE A MAJOR MARATHON!
FOR A WORKING LINE I WOULD ALLOW 1.5-2 HOURS PER DAY WHEN MATURE. MENTAL STIMULATION MAY REDUCE THE NEED FOR PHYSICAL EXERCISE AND EACH DOG IS AN INDIVIDUAL. SHOW BRED LINES WILL REQUIRE LESS.

Where can I find a good working, sensible line
THAT'S AN OXYMORON! :)
